Having collected a variety of prestigious accolades for his previous work, Matt Epp has brought forward a new level of personal and professional growth throughout ‘Shadowlands’. Here’s our track-by-track thoughts.
Kicking off with the first track, “Runaway”, dragging instrumentals lead into a lyrical journey highlighting Matt’s interest to take steps forward with optimism into the beginning of a brighter and more fruitful future ahead. The second track, “Hit The Ground”, slows it down into a lyrical ode to a relationship that began starry-eyed and laced with love at first sight and then slowly fizzled out and ran into a wall that feels impossible to break through. “The Bell” is the third track that is distinct due to Matt’s toned-down vocals that soar as the lyrics highlight that Matt has taken the time to search through every crack and crevice to find the clues as to why an important relationship has ended. The fourth track, “Mercy”, serves an as entry point into Matt’s refreshed perspective as he lyrically builds confidence once again and attempts to enter an open space that is free of the devils of his past.
“North Country” is the fifth track that begins with haunting instrumentals that ignite the lyrical journey into a budding nomadic mindset that came about through having to relocate to a place that can provide the proper atmosphere for creativity, health and wellbeing. The sixth track, “Unnatural”, is an album highlight as Matt’s songwriting style gets down to the bones as he lyrically frees his deepest thoughts within no matter the potential consequences that may come. “Uncharted Waters” is the seventh track that is full of depth as Matt lyrically speaks of his fear in a candid manner which invites listeners to explore the deepest level of vulnerability within themselves. The eighth track, “Good Lover”, picks up the pace and mimics the instrumentals of John Mayer as Matt lyrically attempts to reach a place of revival and find it within himself to once again believe in love. “May I Have This Dance” is the ninth track that is full of romanticism that captivates listeners as Matt showcases that he is in tune with his core and that his ultimate interest to share his life with the apple of his eye. Closing out with “In A Flash”, Matt begins with a beautiful piano instrumental that enhances the poetically rich lyricism that is full of hope, care and liberation.
Earnest and deep, Matt Epp belts from the heart throughout ‘Shadowlands’ which is an invigorating and soulfully rich album every step of the way. If you’re a fan of fellow musicians such as John Mayer, Ryan Adams and Dave Matthews Band, then show your support for Matt Epp on Soundcloud.
