Power-pop outfit Trees and Timber releases their latest single, “Liar’s Den. The track, lifted from their upcoming long-player, Uncle Stanley, explores identity and perception. “Liar’s Den” follows on the heels of the band’s single, “Any Place Love,” released in March 2024.
Made up of Joe Baker (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Gwen Lewandowski (bass), and Paul Rybicki (drums), Trees and Timber was formed in 2010. Initially a five-piece band named Hi-Fido, they soon changed their name to Trees and Timber; but then became a four-piece, then a three-piece, then a two-piece band. Eventually, they became a “band with zero members.”
In their current manifestation, Trees and Timber describe their sound as “aggressive pop supreme.” In 2012, they recorded an EP titled Electric Gypsy Lovechild. In 2015, they released their debut long player, Hello, My Name is Love, via Swoon Records.
At its core, ‘Liar’s Den’ embodies the essence of Trees and Timber – daring, original, and unapologetically bold, while channeling the spirit and theatricality of ‘70s glam rock, a la Bowie and Queen.
“Liar’s Den” opens on throbbing tones flowing into a raw beat topped by gleaming, growling guitars and a luminously glowing topline. The melody merges tangs of punk with glam rock, forging visceral washes of uncomplicated sound. Gwen’s vocals, vaguely reminiscent of Chrissie Hynde, imbue the lyrics with edgy flavors, at once imminent and faintly portentous.
In a world where conformity often masquerades as authenticity, Trees and Timber challenge listeners to peel back the layers of onion-like pretense and embrace the beauty of their true selves.
“Liar’s Den” is a visceral, affecting song, uncooked, and bona fide that arrives at the perfect time – when music is tainted by overprocessing.
