Paying his dues in order to capitalize on greatness within, EDM Rock Artist, Toggo Ultrarock, has given his all to create the existence and musical world of his dreams. Lacing his latest release, ‘Ultrarock’, with the potent discovery of his purpose, the internal rebirth of a man who has forged through a blazing fire to in turn become the flame is palpable and inspirational for listeners of all walks of life. I caught up with lead vocalist, Toggo, to discuss life experiences that has transformed his vision, the recent release of ‘Ultrarock’, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, you have a very touching backtale to your artistry. Tell us about how Toggo Ultrarock came to life.
It’s a long tumultuous tale, but to make a long story short, I had a very successful band in LA a few years ago then tragedy struck and I lost everything. I had to rebuild myself and my life from scratch. But, I sort of needed the kick in the balls. It gave me a monster fire in my belly which fueled me to reinvent myself and become Toggo Ultrarock.
Your EP, ‘Ultrarock’, has received fantastic reviews across the board. Tell us about the creative process and intention behind the album.
‘Ultrarock’ was fueled by one thing: pure love. I’ve never written as passionately as I did for ‘Ultrarock’. I was madly in love, and then I was madly heartbroken, but without ever giving up on love. The result of that process is that EP which is my proudest achievement so far in my career. I have never intended it to be an EP though, that just sort of naturally happened when I was offered a production deal by DeepFrost Studios, which is one of the big pop production houses in Norway.
Tell us about your current experience throughout the Toggo Ultrarock Fall 2017 tour. Has there been any standout connections that you have made with fans along the way?
I just came back actually! The tour was amazing, we had such a great time out there. Probably way too alcohol-soaked, but hey you only live once! Seriously though it was a blast. From New York to Norway to the UK, the tour was a riot from the word go. Everyone’s favorite show was in Trondheim, Norway. The place was completely packed, we were treated like royalty, and the crowd was amazing. As far as standout fan connections, I think someone crying while taking photos with me took the cake. For a relatively unknown artist like myself, stuff like still blows me away.
Your vocal style and range is captivating. Tell us about any techniques or tricks that you utilize to preserve and nurture your voice.
Aw, thanks, that means a lot! I think my deepest guarded tricks are limited sleep, lots of wine, no vocal warm ups and no physical exercise whatsoever. Seriously though, I’m not kidding! I’m lucky enough to have been blessed with a solid pair of vocal pipes, so for me, whatever I do vocally comes naturally and effortlessly. At least for now!
What has been the most enlightening single personal experience that you have encountered throughout your days as a musician?
Wow, you’re asking some really good questions here, Jessica! That one’s easy though – it was when a depressed teenaged fan reached out to tell me about her problems and issues in life, and that my music gets her though each day. That didn’t just touch me deeply; it made me realize the difference I can make in the world with my music which in turn really lit a fire under my ass to take my music as far as I can go, so I can impact as many people as possible.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
I’m definitely a rookie there, as I’ve only got one so far, which is the Ultrarock symbol on the back of my elbow. I’m so amazingly happy with that one though, done by the one and only Connor Garrity at Timeless Tattoo in Hollywood. I’m ready for my next one already.
If you could get tattooed by any tattoo artist in the world, what would you get done and which artist would you choose?
The artist is the easy part – once again, Connor Garrity from Timeless Tattoo in Hollywood. The work he does is amazing. My tattoo is all black, and the way he filled it is just impeccable, months later it still is pitch black and the detail is unreal. As far as what I would get, well, I’m going to LA in about a month, so I better figure it out by then!
If you could challenge yourself to overcome any self-imposed fears, what would you choose and why?
The fear of failing at anything I do. Because it’s a really sucky fear that can really get the best of me. Of course, spitting in the face of that fear has made me so much stronger than I thought I could be, so at the same time, I supposed there’s a reason why we have fears.
How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?
Another great question, wow you are deep, I love it! I think I would be an extremely inappropriate 12-year-old.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
Thank you so much for all the support so far, it’s been humbling to experience the kind of support I’ve gotten from you guys, and I love you!
