The Canadian Metal freaks of nature, Threat Signal, are gearing up to hit the road to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut album full of furious fervor, ‘Under Reprisal‘. Packaged with sheer delight for all of you ragin’ scene kids, I touched base with lead vocalist, Jon Howard, to further discuss the tour, the upcoming album, and more. Sit on the edge of your seat and don’t miss a beat.
What inspired y’all to hop back on the road to celebrate the tenth anniversary of ‘Under Reprisal’?
Well after sitting on our thumbs for 2 years we thought hey… why don’t we pull them out already and play some shows!! haha. Seriously though, I brought the idea to my band of playing a few shows to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Under Reprisal, and they were all for it. That album made a huge impact on our lives so it would be a shame not to throw a big party! Also in that 2 year span we recorded a badass new album, our 4th album which is titled “Disconnect”.
In general, what do you want to integrate in your music? What is the most important element for you?
For me it’s emotion, if I can’t feel anything from a piece of music I won’t get into it or want to play it… The emotion could be intense, angry, mad, energetic, or maybe something relaxing, happy, epic kinda shit that leaves your whole body tingling, just a feeling that leaves you moved. It could be very hard to play, or very simple, it doesn’t matter as long as there is a form of emotion to relate to.
How is your live show different from the music on your album?
We are a band who strives to sound very similar to our albums when we perform live. We have been told many times that we sound like our albums live, which is a huge compliment! Our tones may differ live than from the album since we experiment with various gear when recording, however we really make sure to pull off everything performance wise.
How did you come up with the name Threat Signal?
What’s the story or meaning behind the name? I wish I had an exciting story for ya, but nope… We just thought of some cool words and threw em together. Actually my guitarists at the time (2004) came up with the name, brought it to me and I was instantly sold on it. The name really worked with the lyrics I was writing, like there is a threat to the world and we are signaling to watch out for it. Also I typed the name threat signal into google search and nothing came up so I knew we were good to go – haha!
Let’s talk a bit about your debut album ‘Under Reprisal’? If you could change anything today, would you and why?
Honestly? Nothing. Even though I could go back and record a few things better, change some parts, or add to parts, it doesn’t matter, not one album is ‘perfect’. That album was written in a certain time and place, which created the whole feeling of the album, and I wouldn’t even consider changing that for the world. To think about going back is just a waste of time for me, it’s all about looking at the present and maybe just a little bit forward to crushing the future. This tour is a celebration of what we did then, note for note.
What was the writing and recording process like for the record?
The writing process was very relaxed actually. We began writing songs back in 2003 with just 2 guitarists and myself on vocals. We programmed demo drums and recorded into an old PC. The whole idea was just a recording project to write killer songs together, not really thinking about starting a full band. However when I posted Rational Eyes and a few other songs online, they went viral I guess you could say, and Nuclear Blast came knocking on our door with a record deal. We then rounded out the band with a drummer and bass player, however the songwriting was still done with the original 2 band members and myself.
Did each and every one of you write together in the studio or did you bring in individual songs or ideas?
The album recording process was very surreal for us. Christian Olde Wolbers of the band Fear Factory was given a copy of our demo cd, and he called me up interested in producing the full length. We could barely believe it considering we are huge fans of FF. Christian flew us all down to LA for 6 weeks to record Under Reprisal and we had a blast!
Do you have any plans to tour behind the upcoming album scheduled to release late 2016? If so, could you let us in on your tour plans?
We’ve locked down a European tour in late 2016 which we are really stoked on, but yea I can’t give any details yet… We are pushing hard to get more tours around the world in support of this album as well, we ain’t slowin down!
What are the long term plans for Threat Signal?
We are already writing material for our 5th album, so we hope to release albums closer together. Long term plans have always been the same for me. Write cool shit and do cool tours. If that works out is another story haha but I will always keep at it
Last but certainly not least, Is there anything that I have not asked that you think our readers should know about?
We now have Christian Olde Wolbers (formerly of Fear Factory) playing bass for us on the whole Under Reprisal anniversary tour! And it looks like he is going to stay in the band as well. Get stoked!!!
