Remaining a big kid at heart with genuine energy that is palpable from the start, Montreal/Quebec DJ/Producer, Snails, has created his own strange musical alchemy and aesthetic that has drawn fans together around the world. Between multidimensional stage designs and hard-hitting tracks that get listeners hearts pumping and spirits lifted, Snails has come a long way through a humbling backstory that showcases how far you can travel in life when you dedicate your time, energy and focus into doing exactly what you love. I caught up with the man to discuss the release of ‘The Shell’, finding influence throughout his travels, creating a world for his fans, tattoos, and more.
Congrats on the recent release of your debut album, ‘The Shell’. Tell us about the creative process that brought this album to life.
I started working on this album in December of 2016. I have been traveling a lot so I turned this into a fun project to create on the road. I ended up in China, Australia, Europe and all over the United States which influenced the creative process and allowed me to work within many studios around the world. I really enjoyed getting the inspiration to put throughout the album while traveling! I also used influence that I’ve gained throughout my entire life from things such as video games and experiences that I tried to put into the storyline of the album. We have so many crazy new visuals for this album; everything almost feels like a video game. All of the artwork on the new stage looks so realistic; it’s like I’ve reached level Snails 2.0!
Totally! Your stage designs and light shows are out of this world. Who builds your tour light shows?
I work with a Montreal based company by the name of 4U2C. They build stages for artists such as Chance The Rapper, Future and a bunch of other cool artists, and one of my friends knew a person that works for them and gave me the idea! We came up with so many crazy ideas that they have knocked out of the ballpark. Everything about the stage designs is so unique and out of the ordinary. One of my goals is to always push it to another level and try something that hasn’t been tried before. Everything has come together to create a whole new story and visual experience for the fans!
You literally have created another dimension for your listeners. Your army of fans, Vomitsquad, continues to grow at rapid speed. Tell us a bit about your journey over the past few years and the connections that you’ve built with your fans.
Yes! It’s crazy. You know, I started making music in my bedroom. I was a Graphic Designer, to begin with, and then I discovered videos about self-producing music. I started making really weird music with weird sounds and after a year or two of studying, I was gaining support from major artists like Skrillex, Diplo, and many more massive names in this industry. It is pretty crazy for me to think about how far this all has gone. I still have so much passion and am so happy when I am creating weird music. Everything has really come from the heart. I have so many fans that have been there since day one and I owe them so much. I owe them so much for supporting me throughout every single project. I owe them for allowing me to create a whole new world and a whole new sound for them. I worked really hard on the album and my fans have been so supportive along the way! More than ever, I am ready to give back and give them all a whole new world through my music and visuals.
Powerful. There are so many people traveling from around the world to see you play at EDC Orlando this weekend; I bet that you’re super excited for that.
Oh man. EDC feels like I am with and amongst my family every time. Every time I run with the EDC family, it is an amazing time! People are so nice and it is so much fun. There is no stress and I am stoked that it is in Orlando because we don’t stop in Orlando on my upcoming tour, ‘The Shell Tour’. Orlando is one of my favorite places to play in the states, so every time that I go there, I have a blast! I cannot wait to rage and see everybody at EDC Orlando this weekend!
Incredible. Are you taking The Shell tour beyond the states? Where are you going to be playing throughout?
‘The Shell’ Tour starts in Vancouver on November 16th and we are going to be hitting the West Coast and doing tons of shows over a month and a half period! We hit Montreal and Toronto as well, and there are so many spots we will be playing throughout the states. We aren’t bringing ‘The Shell’ outside of the states yet, but it is definitely something that I would love to do next year! I want to bring this weird experience everywhere that I can because it’s my baby that I have been working on for nine months that I want to share with everybody!
Awesome, there are so many people looking forward to seeing you. Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the tattoo artists that you worked with to bring them to life.
I am lame, I only have two tattoos on my arms! They are more so symbols rather than the crazy art that is throughout the tattoo world now. One of my pieces is an alien head that has a Yin/Yang symbol that I got tattooed by a friend that took me to a lot of shows throughout the states! The second piece is my tattoo to remember who I am forever and is representative of this project and how if it were to stop at any time, I would always remember all of the good times.
That’s not lame at all! If anything, you don’t have any tattoos that you regret and ultimately, each piece is reminiscent of a certain chapter, time or feeling that you’ve felt throughout your life.
Yeah, exactly. I am not looking to just get any old tattoo that doesn’t mean anything to me. There is one tattoo that I want to get about my favorite quote about good people and good times. I try to always be positive in life!
Absolutely. Positivity is infectious! Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
I am so excited to see everybody throughout the tour in every city! Check out all of the dates on my website if you want to come. The support with my album has been incredible as well. It is amazing to see all of the great reviews of my weird music! On the first day of the release, the album hit the #1 spot on the iTunes Electronic Chart and I could not believe it! My manager told me while we were doing a live stream on Facebook and I was freaking out! I was tripping out. It’s crazy to see the real results like that as an artist. I am so excited about everything and cannot thank you all enough for your support.
