Asian-American rapper Star2 recently introduce his brand-new single/music video, “Run Away,” from his upcoming EP, Real Life, with features from Luh Kel, Lil Poppa, $tupid Young, and Soulja Boy.
“Run Away” is a ‘conscious rap’ song about the social and environmental calamities occurring on our world, including the horrific situation in Ukraine.
Star2 knows precisely what Ukraine is going through since he grew up in a refugee camp in Southeast Asia after his family escaped the genocide and ethnic cleansing of his Ka-ren people by the Burmese Army and Myanmar Military Regime.
Without a mother or father, Star2 moved to the U.S. at the age of six, when his grandmother was chosen in a lottery and allowed to emigrate. Beginning a new life in San Diego, California, Star2 found himself living in the inner city with a drug-addicted uncle. Music proved to be Star2’s salvation. As a teenager he learned to rap, sing, write, and perform, while simultaneously developing his unique sound full of great hooks, rich harmonies, and progressive R&B elements.
“Run Away” follows on the heels of Star2’s previous hits such as “Real Life,” “I Wanna Get F’d Up,” and “Thinking Bout You.”
Produced by Chico Bennett (Madonna, The Killers, Prince, Lady Gaga), “Run Away” delivers equal measures of religious testimony and philosophical understanding, imploring others to reflect on the suffering and anguish caused by homelessness, poverty, violence, and war.
The video, depicting graphic images of society’s problems including war, homelessness, poverty, refugees, sickness, and police brutality, is at once alarming and eye-opening.
“Run Away” opens on low-slung, gleaming guitars riding a thumping rhythm as Star2’s finessed flow imbues the lyrics with his melancholic reaction to the state of the world. Luminous accents fill the tune with dazzling textures.
The amalgamation of misty, ethereal colors, Star2’s melodic flow, and moving images displayed on numerous screens infuse “Run Away” with multilayered despondency and despair.
Star2 has it going on! With “Run Away,” he reveals profound emotion, his gift for songwriting, and his compelling voice.
