“Mother,” the latest single from Louisiana’s hard rock/nu metal outfit SevVven, sees the band blending atmospheric metal with tangs of heavier surfaces. Released via Pepper Gomez’s snowballing label, Wake Up! Music Rocks, “Mother” hits all the right notes.
Made up of Josh Valdivieso (vocals), Ant Jones (guitar), Jessie Hoda (guitar), Tanner Istre (bass), and Katt Lee (drums), SevVven began as a duo. After dropping their self-titled album in 2020, the pair started writing new music for their next album and expanding the band’s lineup.
In 2021, SevVven released their single, “Falling,” which hit the 18th spot on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Indicator chart. They followed with “All I Need is You,” which followed suit, taking over the 23rd spot on Billboard. “Woe Is Me,” featuring Myles Clayborne, appeared in 2022, setting the stage for SevVven’s performance at the Louder Than Life Festival.
“Mother” rolls out on soft, sparkling tones topped by elegiac, evocative vocals, suffusing the lyrics with melancholic savors. A light, trembling rhythm infuses the tune with plaintive urgency. A gently shimmering breakdown shifts the harmonics, leading to a searing scream and denser guitar textures, elevating the melody to moody heights and resonance.
“You and I / We took the world by surprise / It’s why we came out alive here and well / Oooo / Day and night / Passes by / Not one regret will I ever cry / This is why I wrote this for you / Mother.”
A brawny outro offers thick, weighty guitars, growling with dark colors as iridescent accents envelop the music in eerie edges.
A benchmark of nu-metal, at once atmospheric and hefty, “Mother” furnishes a lifetime of emotions emerging from the shadows.
