Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Seth Glier recently unveiled the music video for “If It Wasn’t For You,” a song about transforming trauma into gratitude and awareness.
Explaining the song’s inspiration, Seth says, “The title was inspired by an answer Malala Yousafzai gave in a press conference after accepting her noble peace prize. She was asked ‘what would you say to the two members of the Taliban who tried to kill you if you ever crossed paths with them again.’ Her answer was ‘I’d thank them because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have the platform I have now to talk about women’s education.’”
Seth goes on to add, “I wouldn’t be who I am without the pain that others caused me so to deny them love is to deny myself of the same. I thought Malala gave us such an exquisite example of blaming responsibly and wanted to capture that idea of giving proper credit to the people who trespassed against you into a song.”
Along with sharing the stage with artists such as Ani DiFranco, Martin Sexton, James Taylor, Ronnie Spector, and Marc Cohn, Seth has released five albums, amassed five Independent Music Awards, and undertaken an international tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department.
Initially, a folk artist, with the release of his fourth album, If I Could Change One Thing, Seth moved more toward his unique pop sound. So far this year, he’s released two singles, “Stages” and “If It Wasn’t For You,” and is preparing to release more new music.
Opening on a low-slung potent pop rhythm, “If It Wasn’t For You” features gleaming layers of harmonics topped by Glier’s inimitable voice, honeyed and chock-full of passionate timbres. Glowing backing harmonies imbue the song with depth and dimension, rubricating Glier’s marvelous delivery, phrasing, and flow.
Wonderfully wrought, “If It Wasn’t For You” projects coruscating colors riding an infectious rhythm, all crowned by the delicious tones of Seth Glier.
