Oklahoma multifaceted musician, Benjamin Dean Wilson, is a one-man show who translated his introverted nature into an opportunity to blend his film history into a bizarre musical mystery throughout his latest album, ‘The Smartest Person in the Room’, which incorporated a blast from the past through being recorded in analog.
Kicking off with the first and title track, “The Smartest Person in the Room”, Benjamin begins by lyrically stating that he feels alienated from modern-culture and recognizes that the manner in which he lives his everyday life doesn’t align with typical 9-5 corporate monsters that are swallowed whole by outside influence. The second track, “Won’t Say It Again”, lyrically tackles a human being’s battle with their ego while giving off the impression that Benjamin is no longer going to fall for mindless pity parties and prideful games that make a wizened mind go insane. “A Difficult Decision For Ronny Giovanni” is the third track which begins with the impression of being an intro for a television show and then swiftly lyrically speaks of a fictional character that Benjamin has created within his idiosyncratic mind while the instrumentals travel in and out of multiple genres.
The fourth track, “Ridgemore Hotel”, is an expansive lyrical exploration that tackles the life of a truck-driver twisting and turning through thoughts within their mind while living life on the road. “Mr. Paranoid, Lizzy, and Her Family” is the fifth track takes the release for a turn that mimics the lyrical style of Weird Al Yankovic over a comical and cunning blast lyrically highlighting the little things that human beings complicate when in all reality, there are far more important pieces of life to muse and dwell upon. Closing out with “Vitamin Supplements”, Benjamin puts the cherry on top of an uninhibited album full of subliminal messages that speak of the broad array of ideas and workings within a rapid mind that is ahead of their time.
Benjamin Dean Wilson is an independent and free thinker who doesn’t fancy the crowd. If you’re a fan of an array of fellow musicians such as “Weird Al” Yankovic, Tom Lehrer and The Kinks, then grab your copy of ‘The Smartest Person in the Room’ on Bandcamp.
