Los Angeles native and electric bass player Nick Campbell Destroys recently released his new single, “Fancy Jeans,” featuring Jacob Luttrell, a track from his forthcoming debut album, Art.
Art, set to release in 2022, is a dynamic amalgam of Industrial Jazz-Funk music; a diverse fusion of influences spanning Frank Zappa, Nine Inch Nails, Vulfpeck, and Mononeon. It’s music you can’t put a label on, and perfectly defines the phrase ‘genre-breaking.’
Nick’s sound, a reinvention of jazz, superimposes triadic patterns over static harmony, bringing a modern variation to “getting modal.” His avant-garde approach to writing music inspired the name Nick Campbell Destroys.
Talking about “Fancy Jeans,” Nick says, “If an alien were asked to compose a top 40 single after only listening to Frank Zappa and 20 minutes of pop radio, it would sound a lot like ‘Fancy Jeans.’”
Nick has shared the stage with Pomplamoose, Scary Pockets, Charlie Puth, Vulfpeck, Meghan Trainor, Raquel Rodriguez, Nigel Hall, Josh Smith, Kirk Fletcher, Michael Mayo, and Moonchild, as well as composing original music with Shrek Is Love and Bear Attack.
Musicians on “Fancy Jeans” include Nick Campbell (bass, guitar, synth), Jacob Luttrell (vocals), Jacob Mann (keys), Rob Humphreys (drums), and Michael Mayo (Bgvs).
“Fancy Jeans” opens on a funky rhythm brimming with buoyant energy as Jacob Luttrell’s vibrant voice imbues the lyrics with delicious, upbeat tones. Interludes of creamy, psychedelic, melodic textures give the tune a tasty R&B flow, adding shifting flavors.
Radiant vocal harmonies inject depth and dimension, while simultaneously highlighting Jacob’s sizzling voice, including a luscious scatting flow as the tune winds down.
With “Fancy Jeans,” Nick Campbell Destroys delivers great, swashbuckling funk, a galvanizing rhythm, along with the smashing voice of Jacob Luttrell.
