SoCal duo Melee Fairy drops their brand-new single, “Stoner Boi,” produced by Jose Alcantar (Blue October, New Found Glory, Something Corporate), and lifted from Melee Fairy’s upcoming EP, slated for release later this summer.
Talking about the song, vocalist/keyboardist Moxii says, “Lyrically, I’m inspired by storytellers and channeled angst because I can relate to it. ‘Stoner Boi’ is a little different from anything I usually write as it’s essentially a love song and sorta cheeky.”
Made up of Moxii and Fox (guitar), Melee Fairy got together after meeting serendipitously at a store, where they immediately connected over music. The band’s sound blends elements of emo, post-hardcore, rock, and grunge into deliciously potent music painted with hints of nostalgia, while at the same time riding a modern edge.
Fox shares, “I’ve known Moxii for a long time and got to know her tastes and style regarding music and life. It’s also helped to better understand her goal for the band and herself as a musician/performer. Each Melee Fairy song is a Sad or Angry Bop, and we’re putting in the work as writers and live performers to make this thing work. Our best show to date has been at a thrift store, so that said, we’ll play anywhere the audience wants to see us. See you there, and thanks to Jose Alcantar for producing this single.!”
“Stoner Boi” opens on a spectral riff flowing into a tight, crunching rhythm with tasty, flat percussion topped by Moxii’s evocative vocals, vaguely reminiscent of Gwen Stefani, only more nuanced and sensuously beckoning. It’s one of those nonpareil voices that drip with seductive tones, revealing yummy smoky hues and a Medusa-like allure.
The melody, drenched in retro tangs merged with alt-rock heft and driven by Fox’s guitar, presents a compelling sonic shape, at once thick and visceral yet with a veneer of elegance.
Wonderfully innovative and distinctive, Melee Fairy has it going on! With “Stoner Boi,” they establish themselves as one of the best new bands around.
