This past summer, Drummer Luke Holland of The Word Alive was nominated for Best Drummer presented by DW Drums at the second annual APMAs. Tattoo.com had the pleasure of chatting with Holland regarding his favorite ink and plans for upcoming pieces. Check out what Holland had to say about the birth of his love for tattoos.
How old were you when you got your first tattoo, and what was the reason behind it?
I was 18 years old. All the guys in my band were getting a tour tat. I got a phone call saying they weren’t going to get it without me. So you could say peer pressure! [It was a] traditional Sailor Jerry propeller with wings signifying the amount of traveling we do together.
Pick 3 of your favorite tattoos and describe them/tell us about the history of each one.
My favorite tattoo is my Arizona landscape on my calf. I’ve lived in Arizona since the day I was born, so naturally, it holds a special place in my heart.
The second would be my jellyfish in space on my left forearm because I love the original drawing so much. The tattoo execution was incredible in accordance with the original.
The third would be Shiva from Final Fantasy VIII doing Diamond Dust. I’m a huge RPG nerd, and I grew up playing a lot of the Final Fantasy games.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
A couple of my favorite artists are Josh Brizuela (Bask) who drew my jellyfish in space and my Arizona landscape. The artist who did all 3 of my favorite tattoos I listed before is Tim Knecht (TKO Tattoos) out of Maryland. Both Josh and Tim’s utilization of color is what motivated me to start my sleeve.
What is the next piece of work you would like to have done?
Next I have to finish the inner-bicep of my sleeve, which I’m sure will be done by the time this is published. I want to complete my right leg as well.
Have you ever gotten a tattoo that you regretted? Describe.
I don’t have a single tattoo I regret…yet!
