Los Angeles singer-songwriter and producer Josh Stevens recently released a new single, entitled “Somewhere.” The track was co-produced by Jeffrey “Zoux” Bluestein.
“Somewhere” tells the tale of a young woman in Hollywood, as she struggles to attain fame and success.
Early in his music career, Stevens’ work revolved around hip-hop, writing and rapping with Mental Advisory, followed by working with artists like Warren G, Snoop Dogg, The Game, and Clyde Carson. Later, he discovered a taste and talent for pop, indie-rock, and dance music, hooking up with LMFAO, Pitbull, J-Lo, Steve Aoki, Young Jeezy, and Ne-Yo.
Stevens wrote, engineered, and toured with LMFAO in support of Sorry for Party Rocking, which featured a number of big hits, including “Party Rock Anthem,” “Champagne Showers,” and “Sexy and I Know it.” He followed this success by working with Jennifer Lopez on “Going In,” which featured Flo Rida and Lil John. The song hit the number one spot on Billboard’s Dance charts.
Steven’s work has won a Grammy Award, achieved platinum certification in the U.S. and Australia, and been nominated for both Billboard and Juno Awards.
“Somewhere” opens on gleaming keyboards flowing into an indie-rock tune vaguely reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Stevens’ voice infuses the lyrics with tight surging textures, escalating to intense surface colors on the chorus. Later, he injects a delicious rap-lite flow rife with smart rhymes.
A thumping rhythm, potent and muscular, imbues the song with beau coup sonic punch, as radiant vocal harmonies add dimension and vibrant depth.
The video presents a surreal perspective of La La Land, opening with Stevens in a posh mall, followed by his exit out onto the streets of Hollywood. As he strolls around taking in the sights, he walks backwards, as do all the other figures in the visual. This reverse view imbues the visuals with a disorientating angle, as if everything in Hollywood travels an atypical path.
“Somewhere” delivers a tasty blend of indie-rock merged with tangs of hip-hop flow, all topped by the evocative tones of Josh Stevens.
