Def Jam Recordings latest hit-maker, Trap Beckham, is sizzling up the Hip-Hop scene with a sunny outlook on life and the gifts that he possesses and lives to share with the world. Stemming from Florida, the young man stays hands-on and loyal to his fans in a manner that is magnetic and is drawing in listeners worldwide with his authentic charisma and charm. I caught up with Trap to discuss his latest release, “Do You?” (Believe in love), being a part of the Def Jam Recordings family, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Trap Beckham?
What’s good readers! It’s Young Trap Beckham, Jacksonville native, Def Jam Record signee, Backdoor Music, and Stevie Stacks Entertainment.
Congrats on your latest release, “Do You?” (Believe in love). Tell us about your songwriting process and the level of vulnerability in which you approach writing tracks?
Basically, the sky’s the limit when I’m writing tracks. I like to write my own stuff based off my own experiences and me not living the typical lifestyles like the party lifestyle so I got a lot to say. When I’m writing a record, it’s a moment in time; however, I’m feeling that’s what I write about. It’s really a feeling on the track more than just me writing to anything. If I don’t feel it, it’s nothing.
What was going on in your life when you put together that track?
When I was writing “Do You”, I was going through beats and came across that one. It had the K-Ci and Jojo sample. It was the perfect fit for how I was feeling that day. A girl I was talking to was asking me “do you love me?” or she kept asking “do I love her?” and that was my response through the song because I didn’t really answer her that day. So when I said “do you believe in love, you know I believe in love. I say well girl of course.” It was a dope record.
Tell us about some of your favorite tattoos and the artists that brought them to life.
All of my tattoos are house tattoos besides two. I got two done in the shop but all my tattoos on my upper arm are house tattoos. My dude, Shahad West hooked me up with one my favorite tattoos. It’s boxing gloves with my brother’s name under it, that’s my favorite, my second favorite tattoo is the Backdoor Music one I got my shoulder.
How do you feel being a part of one of the greatest teams of all time, Def Jam Recordings?
I’m happy, I’m stoked and I’m excited. I’m ready to see what the future holds. I’m ready to release more music and get to the people, show them me and my lifestyle. I’m just excited for the future and I’m just blessed to be a part of it.
Are there any tattoos that you have in mind that you’d like to get done in the near future?
I don’t have any in mind, but I do want to get one done asap just like how I do the songs. It’s a feeling or how I’m feeling that day that determines what I think I should get.
Any upcoming tour plans that you can fill us in about?
As of right now, I’m just getting booked for shows weekdays and weekends. I’m not a part of any upcoming tours. I do see myself a part of a few tours before the year is out because of the situation I’m in. As of right now, I’m just getting booked in the South East region of the country for the most part. I will be at SXSW March 16th through the 18th and then on the 18th, I’m actually flying back to Orlando, Florida. I got a show for 104.5 The Beat for their Birthday Bash.
What do fans of Trap Beckham have to look forward to for the remainder of 2017?
You could look forward to more music, a few music projects, I have an EP dropping in May, a mixtape coming out this month in March right before SXSW, and I got a mixtape dropping in July for my birthday 7/14 that’s the mixtape I drop every year for my birthday so look forward to it this year will be the eighth one. We just cooking up this year; we got a lot of dope club bangers that getting ready to hit the clubs and hit the airwaves. We are just loaded up and ready!
