You already know what to expect when members of For Today and Silent Planet come together to bring to life a brutally intense and downright brilliant metal creation. Facedown Records latest metal band, Nothing Left, are gearin’ up for a huge year on the brink of the release of their debut EP, ‘Destroy and Rebuild’, on April 21st, 2017. I caught up with guitarist, Ryan Leitru, to discuss Nothing Left’s experience being a part of the Facedown Records family, the curation of ‘Destroy and Rebuild’, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Nothing Left?
Nothing Left is a hardcore- influenced metal band from the U.S. It contains members from other touring bands (For Today, Silent Planet) that came together to make an aggressive music outlet that is a bit of a throwback to the bands that first got us excited about underground music.
Congrats on the upcoming EP release, ‘Destroy and Rebuild’. Tell us about the concept and creative process behind the album.
Thank you very much. We are very excited to have the EP come out and for people to get a chance to hear what we did purely for fun. The creative process for this band was really unique for us as we have all been in bands for a long time making records. This one differed from the norm for us because all expectations and concern for anyone’s opinions other than ours could really be pushed aside. We wanted to make something that reminded us of what it was like to make music from a place of real creative freedom. That really brought us back to what made aggressive music so appealing to us in the first place.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about your favorite personal pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
Well, myself (Ryan) and Brandon have both been tattooed extensively by a great artist in Zanesville, Ohio named Billy White. He has done a majority of the work on both of us and we love his style. He did a full sleeve on my arm that I gave him the concept and he ran with it and turned it into something very cool. I recommend him very highly, as a good guy and great artist. I am a fan of all styles of tattooing, but the more traditional learning stuff I have always appreciated as it is really just classic and never goes out of style.
Any upcoming tour or festival appearance plans that you can fill us in about?
We are playing at our label Facedown Records Festival called Facedown Fest in Pomona, CA on May 11th. It’s going to be our debut to the festival as an artist on their roster. For Today played it numerous times in our career and it was always a great time with fantastic people. We are thankful to be a part of it again and are all looking forward to it. As far as touring goes, we have stuff in the works and we will definitely be hitting the road in support of the new EP. Stay tuned to our social media sites for all info.
How long have you been playing music and what live show experience in your youth made you feel that you wanted to take the stage?
I have been playing music in bands since I was 13 years old. I saw some bands where I grew up in Iowa playing in basements, legion halls, and barns —yes, you read that right. The shared energy between the band and the crowd was always something that inspired me and what hooked me initially. Watching bands like Analog, Paria, With Dead Hands Rising and other regional bands from our area really got us into the genre. I started touring with For Today when I was 17 and my brother (Brandon) was 15. We literally grew up on the road and in the music scene. It has been a huge part of our lives that we are all so thankful for.
What do fans of Nothing Left have to look forward to in 2017?
Well obviously the release of the EP is a big one as well as seeing the band get out and play more shows live as tours come together. We are looking forward to continuing the writing process and working on what will become the first full-length record as well. I work in at a studio (Graphic Nature Audio) so I have the advantage of being able to work on music whenever I want. Which will hopefully lead to a high output of cool stuff.
Tell us about your experience so far as a family member of Facedown Records.
Facedown Records is a fantastic record label. Some of the most honest and high integrity people in the music industry. They gave For Today a chance when no other labels would. They have always treated bands fairly and with respect without compromising who they are. So when they wanted to partner with our new project we didn’t forget the role they played in getting our careers off the ground. I would and do recommend working with them to any band that asks.
If you could join forces with two bands and tour the world for six months straight, who would you choose and why?
Well, while I think our days of touring for six months straight are behind us, I will say that the tours that we want to do are simply with our good friends and bands that tour for the right reasons. On the list of some of my favorites are Stray from the Path, Counterparts, Norma Jean and too many others to list. Whatever we end up doing we just want it to be a thing we enjoy and have fun with. Because that’s the whole point of this thing.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
Firstly, thank you for caring at all about what we do. It’s amazing to have an interest in our band so we are grateful for that. And finally, keep a lookout for Nothing Left’s debut EP “Destroy and Rebuild” out on April 21st on Facedown records. Pick it up and help support what we are trying to do.
