Inviting every culture, walk of life and human being into their inspirational and candid musical world, Queens Hip-Hop Band, Oxymorrons, are hot and have been progressively claiming their spot. I caught up with the impassioned band to discuss the upcoming release of ‘Gateway Drug’, staying true to your heart and intention, the best grub in Queens, tattoos and more.
Congrats on the upcoming release of ‘Gateway Drug’. There seems to be a lot of wisdom laced within this release. Tell us about the creative and recording process so far.
Demi: Recording ‘Gateway Drug’ has been a great process. We have grown so much from when we first started. Recording it upstate NY in the mountains was amazing. We also used one producer for this project. The Hustle Standard really helped us craft something amazing.
Honesty and Vulnerability were the only roles.
What personal life experiences led you toward creating the message within your new track, “Brunch”?
Demi: We live in a world where you are constantly being judged and being told what to do. I’ve spent way too much time trying to live up to other people’s expectations. Within “Brunch”, we wanted to promote doing what you like no matter what. Your happiness should be your number one priority.
Kami: Personally we felt like things in our lives were starting to get placed in a box, or a certain image. Liberation is one key thing that Oxymorrons stands for so naturally when it came to “Brunch” we wanted to express to live a free life no matter what stigma may carry with it. Do what you love, be what you love.
Is the songwriting process a collaborative effort? Or is there one individual spearheading the process?
Demi: We definitely collaborate, great minds think and build together.
Kami: Writing our records are definitely a collaborative effort! A village is best with different minds coming together and so is a song.
Any upcoming tour or festival appearance plans that you can fill us in about?!
Demi: We have a few things in the works but we will let social media be the announcer of that.
Kami: Definitely a lot of tours and festivals are coming ahead. Keep your eyes on your socials and the website for full details.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the tattoo artists that you worked with to bring them to life.
Demi: Hands down the sleeve on my left arm is my favorite of all of the tattoos that I have. Its scrambled words, dates and letters of all of my families names and birthdays wrapped around my arm. I left gaps for when I get married, have children and when others family members are born. I worked on it with Mike Recchione of Born N Raised Tattoo gallery in Buffalo NY. He is a great friend and great tattoo artist.
Kami: My favorite and most powerful tattoo that I have is a smiley face that is tattooed on my left hand. It’s a symbol of God and that he is always with me. After that would be my avatar air nation logo next to my art of peace. Both done by my good friend Mike.
If any of our readers have never been to Queens, what are some restaurants that are a must to visit?
Demi: Queens is such a diverse place with tons of great food. If I had to say one thing you have to get from my neighborhood would be a Turkey Bacon, Egg and Muenster Cheese from 131st street. Poppi makes it the best!
Kami: Wow that’s hard, Queens has a lot of great food restaurants and a great diversity of different cultures. One I would have to say 5boro. That place has great Mexican food and was created by the Ramons. Also, always have to go to Jamaica Avenue Coliseum and get a beef patty with coco bread. It’s the best.
What have been some challenges that Oxymorrons have encountered and in turn overcome which have served as valuable learning lessons in hindsight?
Demi: We had to learn to take pride in building it on our own. Understanding it’s a marathon not a sprint when it comes to paving your own way and been one of the best lessons we have learned.
What have been the most transformative words of wisdom that you have received from a fellow musician?
Demi: Bruno Mars once told me – “Less is more, use your gifts to fuel your passions”
Kami: Well these words were not personally given to me but the world. JAY-Z said – “You can’t heal what you don’t reveal”. It reminds to never hold back with your issues. Move towards your problems and understand why because holding it in only creates a monster.
If you could exist as a cartoon character for a day, which character would you choose and why?
Demi: I would be Vegeta he goes from Villain, to Anti-hero to Hero.
Kami: I would be Goku having the willpower to be the best version of yourself plus having the ability to fly, shoot fireballs and be second to none in martial arts!
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
Demi: Learn, Know and Become who you are. Don’t get stuck with an imitation of yourself. Love you all. Namaste.
Kami: We love you. More great music to come and never be strangers. We are a family.
