Lebanese Death Metal Duo, KAOTEON, are pushing artistic boundaries and have curated a multidimensional work of art that dabbles into bold subject matters throughout their second release, ‘Damnatio Memoriae’. Taking their influence around the globe over a frighteningly raw and real musical journey, buckle up for a ride through reality upon listening. I caught up with Guitarist, Anthony Kaoteon, to discuss the creative process behind ‘Damnatio Memoriae’, life in Lebanon, being bold and embodying your true self, tattoos and more.
Congrats on the upcoming release of ‘Damnatio Memoriae’. Tell us about the direction that you guys took in the creative process and the message that you intend to send through within this record.
Cheers. ‘Damnatio Memoriae’ was a special record on all levels. I composed the music during 2015-2016, hunted session musicians until I settled on Bass Maestro “Linus” and Drum Talent “Fredrik” who recorded their parts in their home countries Germany and Sweden, respectively, after Wolflust, my vocalist, started laying his vocals in the Netherlands before we stitched all parts together with DugOut productions.
Although I perceive that all carry their own unique quality, which track on the album carries deep personal meaning to you and why?
“The Will” is my personal favorite as it sounds exactly how I intended it to sound when I composed it and Wolflust lyrics match perfectly the mood of the track.
What is one of the challenges that you encountered within recording this album that in turn served as a learning lesson in hindsight?
Never settle for mediocre results.
Think Big, Aim High and Be Bold
You are only as big as you think you are and Kaoteon is Larger than Life.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the tattoo artists that you worked with to bring them to life.
I have a calf piece inspired by the artwork of Damnatio Memoriae that was done by Nestor Avalos. I took his work and added my beloved Chaos Star and came out with a beautiful leg piece.
For those who have never visited Beirut, tell us about some of your favorite tourism attractions that are a must-see when visiting.
Beirut has some of the best nightlife corners in the world. If you want monuments, nature, beach or snow. Go out of Beirut and check other parts of Lebanon but while in Beirut make sure you party for the night is always young there.
This is a bold and broad question. What is your perception of your current daily life in Lebanon?
Lebanon is a beautiful land with amazing communities living under a very low ceiling that binds you and limit you to your own circle and connections. It is very tiring and frustrating to think big in such a country.
If you could sit down and have a conversation with either yourself as a child or yourself as a wizened senior citizen, what would you choose and why?
I would tell the child – Never underestimate the power of will, be bold and a go-getter for life is of no importance if you are not doing what you love to do. To my senior self, I would like to remind him that age is but a number and it is better to exit life with an adrenaline rush rather than playing it safe.
What is your most exciting concert memory that inspires you to give even more to your fans now that you’re on the stage.
Playing Beirut after a very long period of time and hearing people song our lyrics and going insane on our performance made me believe that we are not only doing this for ourselves. We are inspiring a lot of people through our music and that is massive.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
Do not waste your time on insignificant superficial social pressures. Be yourself, enjoy life and make the most of it. Hope to see you live in the crowd and that you purchase the album from our Bandcamp page.
