Orange County Rock band, Hell or Highwater, is a band with an extensive vision that is set to make a splash over the coming years with their Modern Rock sensibilities laced with classic Rock & Roll soul. Keep an eye out for the May 19th, 2017 release of Hell or Highwater’s second full-length release and Spinefarm Records debut, ‘Vista’, but in the meantime, catch the band on tour with Texas Rock band, Nothing More, at a venue near you. I caught up with Hell or Highwater and Atreyu vocalist, Brandon Saller, to discuss the direction of the band, his perception of tattoos as a form of artistic expression with society, “I Want It All” and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Hell or Highwater?
Hell or Highwater is a rock band from Vista, California.
Congrats on the upcoming release of your second full-length album, ‘Vista’. Tell us about the creative and recording process this time around.
We took a lot of time on Vista. We wrote about 60 songs over the course of three years or so. It was definitely a really thought out process. We spent a lot of time really finding what we thought was a perfect vibe for us.
Where do you pull a lot of your inspiration for your songwriting from?
Lyrically and musically, I feel like inspiration comes for our lives. A lot of the lyrics are directly from what we live or feel.
When conceptualizing a personal tattoo for your own body, do you put extensive thought into the process or have you just been tattooed as you please over the years?
I usually have an idea. Most of my tattoos I didn’t wait on. If I have an idea that sticks with me I’ll go for it.
Tell us about your perception of the benefit of tattoos as a form of artistic expression within society these days.
I think these days, tattoos are so accepted. I get asked about my tattoos a lot. People definitely don’t find it weird anymore, I don’t think.
Any upcoming tour or festival appearance plans that you can fill us in about?
We will be out supporting Nothing More this spring and will continue to tour over the next year or so.
Your new single, “I Want It All”, has a very potent message. What life experiences or thoughts led to bringing the track to life?
Just being a bit fed up with watching the world go by. The only person who can control your future is you. This is kind of the “Be extraordinary. Fuck it. You rule” song.
If you could tour the world with any two musicians either dead or alive, who would you choose and why?
Dave Grohl and Tom Petty. Just a couple of my favorite writers. I’d love to hang with both. I feel like that would be a great potentially stoned or drunk time.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
Thanks for waiting patiently for ‘Vista’. The time is now. We’re coming and we appreciate you.
