Sydney Indie rockers, The Griswolds, have come a long way ever since their first single, “Heart of a Lion”, that soared on emerging artists lists back in 2012. The mixup of their catchy tunes and electric live shows have led the gang to create a steadily growing fan-base across the globe, and their latest release showcases the maturation the band has encountered creatively. I caught up with the guys to discuss the release of their second studio album, ‘High Times For Low Lives’, their unique style of songwriting, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who are The Griswolds?
Hey, we are the Griswolds, four sweet Australians that will probably try to steal your girlfriend.
Congrats on the recent release of ‘High Times For Low Lives’. Tell us about the creative and recording process behind the album.
We like to get out into the wilderness to write so we locked ourselves on a farm with no internet and just created for 3 months to write this album. We then recorded it with a Grammy award winning Hip-Hop producer, Andrew Dawson. It was an extremely fun and free creative process, we like to have an anything goes mentality making music. No rules.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
I have so many tattoos that I love, tattoos from all around the world too. I have a little red corvette on my shoulder that myself and our drummer got the day Prince died. I have a love heart and a peace sign on my middle fingers so that no matter what when I tell someone to go fuck themselves, it’s always with love. My girlfriend tattooed a skiing goose on my thigh recently, I wish there was a meaningful story behind this, but there isn’t. My entire left arm is covered in wolves and roses that my friend Merry Wilson did in Byron Bay Australia, she’s amazing! Probably my favorite of them all is this guy \_(ツ)_/¯ on my arm. Needless to say most of my art is playful.
Any upcoming tour or festival appearance plans that you can fill us in about?
We’re actually on tour now around the states and it’s been amazing! Next, we head to Australia to take the tour around home for a bit, then we plan the rest of the year I guess.
Your music serves as an exemplary example of genre-bending material. Tell us about some of your influences and how they have that contributed to your sound.
So much has led to current sound of the band, we listen to so many genres, from Metal, Rock, Punk right into Hip-Hop, Pop, and R&B. I feel like all the above makes the crazy blend of what the Griswolds sound is. It’s just a bunch of guys having fun writing songs
I perceive that your songwriting is incredibly intimate, abounding with vulnerability and candidly rich with wisdom. Are there any significant life experiences that led you guys to want to express yourself in such a raw state musically?
Yeah definitely, I think with how much we toured in 2014,15 and 16, we lost a piece of ourselves somewhere, kinda forgot how to just be normal good dudes. Relationships were falling apart, we were drinking too much amongst other things that we weren’t proud of. I think those experiences made us want to write a brutally honest album about the highs and lows of that kind of lifestyle. We wanted to show the fans the gritty truth about life on the road, not just the “candy” version. Touring can be a fucken blast and we love but it does have its darker moments, that’s the journey we wanted to take people on with this new album.
What’s the best advice that you can give to aspiring musicians?
Get ready to get your hands dirty because no one is gonna help you do this. Everyone and everything is gonna want to get in your way, stay steadfast and true to what you wanna do. Set small goals, then when you achieve them, set bigger ones and so on. There’s no such thing as “making it” there is only doing it.
What do fans of The Griswolds have to look forward to for the remainder of 2017?
Well, we are releasing another single very soon and with it another music video! We couldn’t be more excited to release this track!
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
We luh yoo
