Pulling together a variety of influences from all over the music sphere, Good Tiger comprises of a group of heavy metal maniacs who are gracefully out of their flipping mind. On the brink of the release of their second studio album which consists of a tapestry of innovative sounds, the rockers are willing to take things to a stranger place which has created magnetism toward their music. I caught up with Good Tiger band member and Tattoo Artist, Joaquin Ardiles, to discuss balancing the two artistic mediums, the upcoming release of ‘We Will All Be Gone’, life in London and more.
You guys are gearing up for your upcoming album release, ‘We Will All Be Gone’, in 2018. Tell us about the creative and recording process behind this release.
We spent about a month, maybe a little longer at a beautiful little recording studio here in the UK called Middle Farm Studios with Nolly Getgood and Forrester Savell producing the record. In my old band, we would record all our parts in different places, usually someone’s room, and then book a studio space for the drums and everything was pretty much all laid out already and sparse in terms of time for each member to record and finish the cd, but for this record we got to spend time together going through songs and adding parts and having Nolly or Forrester come in with suggestions. I think that this has given the record a much better direction than the last one. Watching band DVDs as a kid, I have always wanted to do what they did and be in a studio waking up and making music and be immersed in the making of that record all day and night and that’s what happened at Middle Farm. A lot of fun. A lot of coffee.
PS….I wish I had recorded Deliverance and Damnation by Opeth and been in that DVD. Physically crushed into the CD.
What challenges did you guys overcome in the studio that in hindsight aided in the overall result of the album?
This question is assuming we had challenges. If there were challenges, of course we would have overcome them in the most effortless and efficient way, spending no excess energy whatsoever, but there were no challenges. I hear people ask, are Good Tiger just men? Of course we are, just like great white sharks are just fish!
Any upcoming tour or festival appearances that you can fill us in about?
The only one I can talk about is the upcoming UK shows supporting the homie dawgs in Mongol Horde which I am very much looking forward to. Everything else is super top secret I’m sorry, I don’t make the rules.
Joaquin, tell us about what interested you in becoming a tattoo artist and when you first began tattooing?
I thought it would be easy. Turns out it’s real hard. By that point though, I had invested half a leg with shit practice tattoos so I couldn’t turn back, and it’s been amazing ever since. I began tattooing about six years ago. I could always draw a good dinosaur but honestly that shit was useless when it came time to actually do a tattoo. My tattoo style of drawing is completely different from my usual style of drawing. I have to think about where its going, the shape of the design, the weight of the lines, where the shading will be, how will it look in 10 years time, will my client move, etc. Everything else, mastered.
I recently spoke to Jake and Mark from Periphery and I believe that you have tattooed a piece on one of them? What has been some of your favorite pieces that you’ve tattooed?
Yeah on Jake, it was just three little dots. I charged him an extortionate amount of money for it too; I hope he doesn’t read this! I saw how well they were doing on merch and you know what? Big papa has to get him a little bit of that pie!
I like tattooing cool stuff. I did a sick Kaiju head right in the middle of a friend’s chest and he had no other tattoos on his front so it looked super sick. I like tattooing skulls a lot \m/ skulls are metal AF. Reapers are cool and so are snakes. I actually just remembered I did a Zelda tattoo and that is one of my favourites. It was Link slashing through some skulls with wings so it ticked a lot of boxes.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about the backstory behind a favorite piece of yours and the tattoo artist that you worked with to bring the piece to life.
I have been lucky enough to get tattooed by some really great individuals, both as tattooers and as people. I don’t have a favourite piece but here is a list of names of the sickheads that have fucked me up and that continue to do sick work and are bloody lovely too, get tattooed by them. Here are all of their Instagram pages below.
If any of our readers have never been to London, what tourist spots to you recommend to check out?
The British Museum is pretty boss, but honestly just come to mine and we can play some Mario Kart or something, bring me a coffee. Gosh Comics in Soho is cool, lots of good coffee in that area too.
How do you balance your two artistic mediums and how has each contributed to the other?
It’s pretty easy when you are next level bossroadman like I am. I wake up in the morning and decide which of the two I want to do that day, and either hop on the bus for tour or go to the studio to work. Making music to such a high level helps with tattooing because music is the art of life and life is the art of tattooing so really music is the life of the art that is tattooing so art is life and we are all living so it’s natural to live life and therefore, live. I haven’t been able to balance them, one suffers when I don’t pay attention to it and there isn’t enough time in the world to do both because Breath of the Wild is so sick right now that I can’t put it down.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
WHAT. ARE. YOU. THINKING?!
No for real though, thank you for coming to shows and listening to our music and sometimes getting tattooed by me, that’s cool, and buying the drumheads I draw on and looking at my stuff. Thank you, it genuinely means a lot. I understand how lucky I am. I just f**k around in interviews because I am really not that interesting, it is by no means an insult, you are the best, thank you. Also the new Zelda is really good, honestly. And, it’s spelt FAVOURITE.
