It’s not often that you can genuinely say that you have been rocking sold-out shows and stages worldwide ever since 1982, and are still doing so with fiery and glow that is contagious in 2017. Inspiring bands worldwide with ten metal albums for the age, Armored Saint had indented their name into metal history. I caught up with Armored Saint guitarist, Jeff Duncan, to discuss the trick behind the longevity of the band, the live album release of the 1989 smash-hit, ‘Carpe Noctum Live, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, tell us about what inspired your upcoming release of your first live album, ‘Carpe Noctum Live’, since the 1989 live album release, ‘Saints Will Conquer’.
It was time and people have asked us about it over the years. We had some great audio from a couple of shows in Germany, one of them being the Wacken festival. I’m happy we were able to release some live material from the albums Armored Saint have done with the lineup that has existed since 1990.
What are your favorite tracks to jam out to live and what songs really rile the crowd up over the years?
I love all of them, but “Aftermath” is always a great crowd pleaser for sure. Currently, I’m really digging “Win Hands Down”.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
I don’t have that many tattoos, but I’m the only member of Armored Saint who has any! I have a piece that’s a tribute to the memory of my parents which is my favorite. My tattoos were done by Oliver Peck and Tennessee Dave.
What is your perception of the current state of heavy metal?
Heavy metal is alive and well. The most loyal fans over any genre of music in my opinion.
Having toured with a variety of bands such as Metallica, Whitesnake and The Scorpions since your conception in the 80’s, is there a band that you haven’t shared the stage with that you would love to do so with in the future?
Jeff: Black Sabbath … but it’s a bit late for that now!
Any upcoming tour or festival appearance plans that you can fill us in about?
Yes! We’re doing dates in Ireland and the U.K. In March.
What is the most important lesson you have learned being a part of the music industry since the 80’s that you can share with up and coming bands?
Always do it for the love of playing music. The biz is a roller coaster. Watch your money of course, but don’t let the business side take away your passion for playing and being creative.
What do fans of Armored Saint have to look forward to in 2017?!
More tour dates! Hopefully we’ll be able to play some places we haven’t played or haven’t played that much.
Any fellow Metal Blade Records labelmates that you’d like to give a shout-out to for a great album?!
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
Jeff: Thank you for showing Armored Saint so much love and support! We’re so fortunate to still be here and it’s because of the fans, period.
