Tulsa Rockers, The Agony Scene, are back in full force when it comes to living out their dream. The guys are on the brink of the release of their fourth studio album, ‘Tormentor’, which will be released with Outerloop Records on July 20th, 2018. I caught up with Guitarist, Chris Emmons, to discuss the band’s return, life in Tulsa, upcoming tour, tattoos and more.
Congrats on the upcoming release of ‘Tormenter’. Tell us about the creative and recording process this time around and what you learned as a band throughout the experience.
Thank you very much. The whole process was fairly laid back. Not to say there were no struggles, but once we had a clear vision for the record, everything started clicking.
Respectfully, tell us about what led you toward bringing The Agony Scene back and how you feel about the band’s return to the world of music.
We played a reunion show in 2014 that kind of stoked the flames. I always felt like we had some unfinished business and that given the right circumstances we would definitely make music again. At first we were just going to record an EP but the vision quickly changed as the growing desire to be a full time band emerged. We feel great about our return. We made a record we’re proud of and we have a great team around us. Couldn’t be more thrilled to get another run at a dream.
Any upcoming tour or festival appearance plans that you can fill us in about?
Absolutely, we will be joining some killer bands on this years installment of The Summer Slaughter Tour which starts on July 13th and runs through August 17th.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the tattoo artists that you worked with to bring them to life.
Mike and myself have been tattooed many times by Kris “Squiggy” Snead at Black Gold in Tulsa.
My favorite piece is a portrait of a famous beagle from Chicago named Kale Chips. Kale was surrendered in rough shape, extremely overweight. I saw his story of successful weight loss on Facebook and on tv. I like dogs and random tattoos, so there it. Check him out, kalechipsthedog on instagram.
If you could get any tattoo, budget-free, by any tattoo artist in the world, which tattoo artist would you choose and what would you get tattooed?
I don’t have a vast knowledge of tattoo artists but I do follow an artist named Domantas Parvainis on Instagram. I believe he is from Lithuania. Pretty incredible stuff. I would love to get some work from him with an ancient Egypt theme.
If any of our readers have never been to Tulsa, what are some hidden gems that you recommend to visit while traveling through the city?
Catch a show at the historic Cain’s Ballroom, a venue that has hosted everyone from The Sex Pistols to Elvis Costello. Take a walk downtown at night and check out all the Art Deco Architecture that dominates the landscape. Stop in and check out the Woody Guthrie Center. And if your thirsty, hit up Soundpony, a cycling bar that hosts great metal and punk bands.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
Yes! A sincere thank you for caring about what we do and allowing us to chase this dream a second time. It’s not lost on us how lucky we are and we are looking to make the most of it. I hope everyone enjoys ‘Tormentor’ which will be out July 20th on Outerloop Records. See you all on the road very soon!
