New York City-based indie-rock outfit Hairpin recently released their new single, “Coyote, a track lifted from their forthcoming EP, slated to drop this spring.
According to the band, “‘Coyote’ captures feelings of frustration stemming from a relationship wrought with broken promises, power imbalances, and dishonesty. The concept hinges on the chorus lyrics, which introduce the possibility of redemption for the relationship. The main hook didn’t form until May 2023, after which it became clear that the song had to finally be committed to tape.”
Made up of Nate Pozin (vocals), Henry Buckingham (guitar), Ryan Couto (bass), and Alex McGourty (guitar, producer), Hairpin’s sound focuses on clear-cut grooves, melodious vocals, angular guitars, pop choruses, and epic arcs.
Since their first show in October 2021, Hairpin has sold out every one of its performances at venues like Baby’s All Right and Mercury Lounge. In November 2023, Hairpin took off on its first-ever tour, with sold-out shows in SF and LA at Brick & Mortar and Catch One.
Hairpin’s electrifying live performances comprise original songs that span the spectrum of the indie-rock genre. The band polishes their songs in rehearsal, followed by further refinement during live shows. Right now, Hairpin is laying down tracks for their upcoming EP.
“Coyote” opens on a quick, potent drum fill and thrumming guitars, followed by the entry of Pozin’s deliciously, low-slung vocals, exuding hints of shadowy mystery. As the melody takes on resonance and additional harmonic layers, the vocals elevate to higher notes, imbuing the lyrics with tight, contagious textures.
The rhythm, dripping with hints of pop energy, gives the tune a galvanizing push that culminates in a gleaming, wall-of-sound outro highlighted by Pozin’s soaring voice.
“It doesn’t have to be like that / You could give it all away / It doesn’t have to be like that / You could give it all to me.”
“Coyote” zeroes in on the ultra-catchy sweet spot of indie-rock: a pulsing insistent rhythm, an alluring melody, and evocatively ebbing and rising vocals.
