At the end of January 2024, independent electronic/dance artist Gianfranco Pescetti released his first album in nearly ten years after the success of his most recent singles in 2023. The new album, DAYSTAR NOCTURNAL, takes listeners on a journey into both ambient and dance music.
With DAYSTAR NOCTURNAL, Pescetti returns to his roots with more classic EDM flavors whilst also delving into the intricate interplay between light and dark. This interplay is apparent in the teaser tracks he’s released in the past year, “Be My Ghost,” “Stopless,” and “The Wake.”
Talking about the contrast of light and dark, Pescetti says, “I’d like to exist at the intersection of both light and dark, and that is how I hear the music. It’s within this duality that the tension—the push and pull—can be found.”
Impeccably produced, “My Ghost,” “Stopless,” and “The Wake” toggle back and forth between light, melodic, and playful surfaces and more serious, ambient explorations of sound.
Pescetti explains, “Music, for me, is something fluid. There has always been an ambivalence that I can’t get away from. ‘DAYSTAR NOCTURNAL’ is my attempt to explore the depth of emotions and create a profoundly personal and evocative sound without conforming to the rigid specifications of a particular genre, all while keeping an eye to the dance floor.”
Encompassing 10 tracks, the album begins with “Clownspunk,” opening with bubbling colors flowing into a dreamy, shimmering melody that expands into darker tones, providing a delightful interaction of varying sonic pigmentations.
Speaking subjectively, entry points include “Macchia, I’ll See You…,” with its drifting, layered intro, followed by a soft and glitteringly warm tapestry of floating hues ensconced in heavier textures. A personal favorite, “Obsidian” features sparkling, chiming facets riding over a mid-tempo rhythm. As the melody takes on a concrete shape, riffling washes blend with percolating pulsations. Offering a gliding aspect.
“Be My Ghost” conjures up suggestions of Kylie Minogue because of its pushing, thumping beat, and then descends to gentler harmonics accented by fizzing, rippling tints. A creamy female voice adds silky, gossamer-like filaments.
The final track, “Stopless” rolls out on a delicious bassline and thumping kick drum as swirls of kaleidoscopic patterns stream overhead, giving the tune a subdued feeling of wild abandon under careful control.
With DAYSTAR NOCTURNAL, Gianfranco Pescetti delivers a lush, vibrant soundscape, providing listeners with a satisfying experience.
