Human creature of creative madness, Jimmy Urine, has built a reputation for saying what is at the tip of his tongue with ease over a musical project that mixed up a variety of ingredients to create a truly authentic style of their own. Although we all adore Mindless Self Indulgence, Jimmy has a variety of tricks up his sleeves and it’s about time that they are being released for the world to indulge. Making his big screen debut on one of the most highly-anticipated movies of the years, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, and releasing a record of otherworldly songs and compositions, ‘The Secret Cinematic Sounds of Jimmy Urine’, it’s safe to say that Jimmy has got it going on. I caught up with the man to discuss bringing ‘The Secret Cinematic Sounds of Jimmy Urine’ to life, playing a role in a Marvel movie, tattoos and more.
Congrats on the upcoming release of ‘The Secret Cinematic Sounds of Jimmy Urine’. Tell us about your journey into composing for games and films and what intrigued you to head down that route.
Well most people think I am Mindless Self Indulgence 24 hours a day, and I realized a lot of professional people reach out to me and only want to license an MSI song for their project. When I tell them I would love to do the whole soundtrack or write something from scratch that is exclusive for their project they are always surprised. They say “Wait what? You do that? You compose?”. So, I figured this record was a great way to show people some of the other musical styles I like and that I am good at. That was my main motivation for going down this route.
You have a huge year ahead of you, and are gearing for the big screen release of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ in which you play the role of Ravager Half-Nut. Is it a dream come true for you to play in a Marvel movie? Tell us about your experience on set.
Well first of all I want to thank James Gunn for making me not just part of the Guardians universe but part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is a big deal and a dream for me as I grew up reading tons of Marvel comics. I also have a piece of alien music I composed in the movie, so thanks again to James and Simon for that. Sooooo cool. Working on Guardians was f**king awesome of course. And being that I knew a bunch of the people on set, in the cast and the crew it was so chill at the same time which is like the best of both worlds. You’re excited to be there but not so nervous that you have anxiety about it, and that made it so much damn fun. I just got back from the premiere and that damn movie is f**king great.
Tell us about any tattoos that you would like to add to your collection in the near future.
Well first off my wife Chantal’s tattoos are the best. I love my wife’s tattoos. Her tattoos are all text like the movie Memento except nice and symmetrical. I love classy text tattoos laid out like a graphic designer would do it. So dope. I actually have no tattoos but I am going to get one when I turn 80 years old. I’m gonna get a Tupac-sized abs tattoo that says “I Survived!”
Making the transition from being a balls-to-the-wall rock musician with MSI to slowing down and creating compositions must have been quite the mental change for you. What is the greatest lesson you have learned so far throughout the transition?
Well way before I was in Mindless Self Indulgence I was a 12 year-old with a sh*tload of synthesizers and a love of soundtracks. I did not buy a rock record until I was 15. The first record I bought was the soundtrack to Star Wars. Then it was John Carpenter, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre etc. All soundtracks and synth records. So it was very, very easy to go back to doing what I did as a kid. In fact the track “Salome” was written way back in the early 80’s. I found the old disks and ran the old synths and re-recorded it in new, better quality. So the songs on this record don’t just sound retro, they are literally from the 1980’s.
IIf Jimmy Urine could develop three superhero superpowers that would come in handy for who you are today, what would they be?
I would want the power to clone myself so I could go do multiple things at once as me. I’d want the power to never sleep, no explanation needed there! And I would want the power to talk to animals to find out how much they actually hate us.
As I perceive you have seen many over the years, what is the most unique Mindless Self Indulgence fan tattoo that you have ever seen?
My signature as a tattoo on people, hands down. There are a lot, I mean a f**k of a lot of people with my signature on their body which is very flattering but f**king nuts when you think about it.
If you could team up with fellow composers to draw inspiration from, who would you choose and why?!
I would team up with John Carpenter because I love his soundtracks and his movies.
If you had any words of wisdom for kids just picking up an instrument or mic for the first time in hopes of starting up a band, what would you say?
You’re only going to learn about the music business when it beats the sh*t out of you.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
We are all f**ked.
