Atlanta metalcore band, Attila, have been spinnin’ the wheels of the hype machine and touring the world non-stop ever since exploding on the scene with head-banging intensity and emotion. The guys recently released their sixth full-length album, ‘Chaos’, on Sharptone Records and are jumping on the road with Bad Omens and Cane Hill to celebrate. I caught up with lead singer, Chris “Fronz” Fronzak, to discuss what’s in store for 2017, the ‘Let’s Get Abducted’ tour, tattoos and more.
Congrats on the release and success of your sixth full-length album, ‘CHAOS’. What approach did you and the rest of the band take when creating this record? What was the creative and recording process like this time around?
For CHAOS, we wanted to go back to our roots and take a more organic approach to the writing process. We wanted a really raw feel. So rather than writing the album digitally, we all met up in an old basement like the old days and just jammed together. Most of the album was written in a live environment like this, which ended up being really awesome. Recording was the most fun we’ve ever had; creating this album with Erik Ron was new and refreshing for us. He was very hand- on with us and helped us to stay as creative as possible.
Attila just announced the ‘Let’s Get Abducted’ tour with Bad Omens and Cane Hill. Have you played with either band before? What brought you all together for this tour?
We haven’t played with either band before so this should be fun! We like bringing out new bands whenever we can; it keeps things fresh and new. I like having full control of who we bring out on tour, we pretty much hand pick every single line up. We enjoy both bands’ music so it should be an awesome time!
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
I have quite a few favorites! I really like the treasure chest on my hand and the owl above it. Both pieces were done by Timmy B. He’s an extremely talented artist and a good friend. We’ve known each other for a long time now. It’s been awesome watching both of our careers blow up at the same time. I also really like the artwork on both sides of my neck. That was done by my close friend Travis Antoni from Phoenix. His work is super bold and he’s the fastest artist I’ve ever worked with, which is a huge plus. It amazes me how quick he can get a piece done without sacrificing quality at all.
Is there a song that personally means a lot to you on the new album, ‘CHAOS’. If so, how so?
I really like “Bulletproof.” It means a lot to me because it’s the first song I’ve ever sang with clean vocals. It was a huge step for me that left me feeling more confident than ever. I really like the lyrics too, they’re really positive and empowering. I think this is a song that will get a lot of people into Attila.
Tell us the story behind the name Attila.
We got the name from Attila the Hun. We were browsing around in a bookstore 13 years ago and we saw a book about Attila the Hun. There wasn’t a whole lot of thought that went into it, we were just like, “Hey, this is a good band name.” [Laughs]
You guys signed to SharpTone Records in 2016. Has the transition between record companies been a fluid process? What changes have you encountered as a band?
It’s been a very smooth process. Every label has something different to offer and we really like what Sharptone has done for us. Being a subsidiary of Nuclear Blast has gained us a lot of new connections across Europe, which is a territory we are constantly growing in. They also have a lot of innovative new ideas. We’re very close with our new label and look forward to working together for a long period of time!
What do fans of Attila have to look forward to in 2017?
LOTS of touring. We are going to be on tour pretty heavily for most of 2017 to promote our new album CHAOS. Our first tour starts February 14 and will be taking us all across the U.S.. Then we head out to Europe and the UK!
If you could travel through one country, all expenses paid, for two months straight, which country would you choose and why?
Definitely Japan! We’ve been fortunate enough to travel the entire world but Japan is still one of our favorite spots. The culture is so amazing and unique out there. We’ve only been to Tokyo but I know that there is SO MUCH more to see which is why I think a full two months would be perfect!
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
