California Rockers, Buckcherry, have been on one wild ride full of dedication, passion and ever since their self-titled debut back in 1999. Carrying the spirit of Rock ‘N’ Roll for decades, the guys are gearing up to spend their summer on the road and are excited for the release of their eighth studio album that is set to drop in 2019. I caught up with Lead Vocalist, Josh Todd, to discuss the upcoming Gen-X Summer Tour, new music coming from Buckcherry, staying true to your roots, tattoos and more.
You guys are just getting back from touring Europe. How’d that go?
It was amazing. We went to Madrid, Barcelona, Sweden and all over the U.K. The last show was in London and it was an amazing experience.
Amazing. What do you think are the biggest differences between crowds overseas vs. crowds in the states?
You know, it’s not a radio-driven market overseas. The best way that I can describe it is that people overseas are very passionate. They get into your entire career, not just your singles and the records that had hits on it. You’ll go overseas and people want to hear all of the obscure songs that we typically wouldn’t play in the states. It is really cool for us to be able to go so far from home and get a reaction from songs that we have created.
I bet. It is great that individuals overseas take the time to dive deeper into the human being behind the musician. I think that music is becoming so much more than simply music. It’s a culture and each band/musician is able to brand themselves and create anything that they want from it these days.
Absolutely, that is going on a lot outside of the states. I don’t want to talk shit about the United States, but we are very spoiled. We get a lot of entertainment. As you travel more and see so many different places overseas, you can just tell how incredibly happy that they are that you are there playing for them.

That sounds fulfilling. Is there a follow-up to your seventh studio album, ‘Rock N’ Roll’, in the works?
Oh yeah! We finished all of the songwriting and we are going into the studio to record it in September. It will be out in the first quarter of 2019. Stevie and I wrote 30 songs for a ten-track record. We really put a lot of time and energy into this upcoming record and I am really proud of it so far.
Awesome. Let’s talk Gen-X Summer Tour. It seems like a lot of memories and history is coming along on this tour.
For sure. We all came up around the same time and it’s really cool that we get to do this tour together. There are so many hits that are going to be played amongst all of us. All of these bands put on a great live show. These shows are also at a low ticket price so it’s something that we really wanted to be a part of. The tickets are selling really well and we are super fired up to get out there and play for everyone.
I bet. Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the tattoo artists that you worked with over the years.
Kevin Quinn is the tattoo artist that has tattooed the majority of my work. He is a guy that does world-class work, but at the time that I had met him, I was a struggling musician who was working a day job. I didn’t have a lot of money. I really wanted to be tattooed and Kevin was really sensitive to my needs; it was very cool. I would take a portion of my paychecks and give him what I could and he would tattoo me. Kevin and I really bonded over the years throughout a ton of tattoo sessions. He tattooed my sleeve, my back, my ribs, some of my legs, etc. We had a lot of great conversations and we do have a lot in common. We listened to a ton of great records over those years.
I can only imagine how many hours you have put into your body. You are covered.
Yeah, I am. Kevin started to understand my vibe. There is this little bird tattooed on my right arm which came about from Kevin having a Japanese umbrella in his studio. He asked me if he could tattoo that on my arm and I just went for it. Kevin also has this butterfly tattooed on his hand where the wings look like brass knuckles. I liked it so much that I asked him to tattoo the same exact piece on me and he did. I am bonded with him through that tattoo. My big back piece was a huge undertaking and he tattooed that on me as well.
That’s cool that you have stuck with Kevin over the years. You have come to earn success and making sure that you’re taking care of the people that you came up with is important.
Yes, it is. Kevin is an amazing guy. I always encourage others to make sure that they build a bond with their tattoo artist. You can’t just go out there and get tattooed by anybody. You have to look at what is tattooed on your body for your whole life.
Exactly. When you’re young, you don’t realize how long life really can be. You have a strong reputation as being one of the hardest working bands in the music industry. Do you have any advice for up and coming musicians who desire to follow in your footsteps?
Be passionate. If you’re a Rock musician these days, you have to put in a ton of work to get to a place where you’re thriving and making a really great living. The genre is saturated and you have to wake up every single day and think about what you can do to make it bigger. You have to keep moving toward your goal every single day. Also, get a good attorney. Don’t ever sign anything without an attorney’s advice.
Truth. Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
The tour is going to be incredible and we are super stoked to hang out with all of you this summer. Look out for our first single dropping at the top of 2019. The new Buckcherry is going to be very special, it’s been three years since we’ve put out a new record and we are really looking forward to putting out new music.
