Indiana-based Southern rock outfit Crossroad Saints just released their single/music video, “Cradle to the Grave,” the first single from their upcoming album, A Song of Your Own, releasing August 20.
Made up of Daryl Venable (keyboards, vocals, songwriter), John Slack (bass), and Mike Slack (drums, percussion), Crossroad Saints reformed in 2019, after Daryl came back to Indiana from an eight-year break in Nashville. In 2020, they entered the studio with producer Corey Miller to begin work on a new album.
Talking about the impending album, the band shares, “Two of the tracks on the album came from songs written and demoed by Daryl before leaving Nashville. A couple more were written while gearing up for the recording sessions. The timing of the pandemic and the resultant halt on studio construction at Round Table Recording Company opened up more time for writing. The bulk of the material was written in early 2020, the pandemic in full bloom. And then there was the summer of 2020 with unrest spilling out into the streets; déjà vu for a kid born in 1955 from the south.”
While Daryl says, “We live in a time wherein the use of language has been utterly sodomized. We argue over whether objective reality itself is real or not. If music and art aren’t saying anything honest, timely, and relevant to the human condition, what’s the point?”
“Cradle to the Grave” travels on an emerging organ, followed by rolling into a bluesy Southern rock melody riding powerful guitars supported by a tasty, driving rhythm. Daryl’s voice, ranging from smooth and melodic to gritty and rasping, infuses the lyrics with the effort of traversing the impulses of life, i.e., behaving from the “cradle to the grave.”
Surging with raw, burning guitars and radiant harmonies, “Cradle to the Grave” pumps out contagious waves of sizzling Southern rock.
