The driving musical force that the Ontario natives that comprise of We Outspoken have created is substantially unique and highly commendable. The four forward-thinkers that have taken their business by the balls and created their own definition of success beyond societal expectations are ruling their own musical nation and sharing their outspoken thoughts throughout their artistic creations. I caught up with the guys to discuss their new record, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is We Outspoken?
Hey, thanks for doing this with us. We Outspoken is Anthony Mascarin, Alex Mascarin, Chris Andrews and Joe Manchisi. We are a punk rock band from Toronto, Canada.
You consider your music and mission to be a voice for those who want and need to be heard and a stance above the crowd; how so? Could you please further elaborate?
We wanted to write music that speaks to our audience. Music that says what you want to say. Music that makes you feel alive. Music that makes you want to get up and fight for your goals and dreams. A lot of bands just write “music”. We wanted our music to make you think. To make you question etc.
Congrats on the new record, ‘All The Right Pieces’? What was the most challenging aspect of creating this record?
Thanks so much. To be honest, everything about creating this record couldn’t have been easier. We got to work with two great producers, Joel Kazmi and Blair Robb. Winston Smith did all of the artwork. We had a great team behind us. This record was the most fun to make. It was an adventure.
It is incredible that you have also created your own label and management company, ‘Outspoken Entertainment’. What is reasoning behind taking this alternative route within your career?
Good question. We wanted to take control of our own business. To wait on a label or management company is a horrible decision. They all come out of the woodwork when you have “proven yourself”, or whatever that means. We just wanted to create our own business and do things our way.
What activities do you guys engage in throughout your spare time to further influence your creativity?
A lot of songwriting and listening to a ton of music. Music is a craft that needs to be worked on constantly..
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
Awesome. Well, a lot of people don’t know this but we all have some matching tattoos. We get them on our tours and travels. It’s a bonding/memory thing for us. Joe our guitarist, is covered from head to toe. My favourite piece on him was done by an artist named Bugsy. Bugsy does a lot of film noir style tats, he rocks! A lot of international artist have worked on us. My favourite is from a tattoo shop in Frankfurt, Germany called Frankfurt Tattoo. Our friend Sascha has done a lot of our work. I got a compass rose and anchor at his shop. If you are in Frankfurt, you need to check him out. Gran Cobb also did some work on us when we toured in California. Grant has worked on some of our favourite bands. India Mara is another awesome artist who works in Toronto from time to time. Alex our drummer has a few pieces from her.. Very clean lines.
Any upcoming tour plans in the near future?
Yeah, we are heading back to Asia, Europe, United States, and South America.
What dream tour would you love to be on with any past or present bands?
When Green Day and Blink 182 did their tour together, that would have been amazing to join.
What is the ultimate direction for We Outspoken?
To keep having fun with what we are doing. We just love to play and help people in anyway that we can.
Last but certainly not least, any messages for your fans?
Be Strong. Be You.
