Stemming from the city that either brings dreams alive or leads human beings to run and hide, Los Angeles’ own, Runaway Kids, have been aiding in keeping punk rock alive while performing off the wall and reckless jams that are a kick to observe live. I caught up with the gang to discuss their recent tour with Pennywise, tattoos, and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who are the Runaway Kids?
Runaway Kids is a punk rock band from Southern California.
You opened up for Pennywise on the ‘About Time’ tour. What did fans get to take away from Runaway Kids this time around?
They got to see seeing nothing but energy coming from us start to finish, we also played some new songs on this tour.
What do you think about the current state of punk rock?
I think the current state of “Punk Rock” is great right now. You have all the bands you’ve always known and loved like Pennywise, Bad Religion, Rancid, Social Distortion, etc still out there touring, making new music, and now there’s finally a slew of new bands such as The Menzingers, PEARS, and bands like us that are making all your favorite music via 2016.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about your favorite pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
I have a three headed wolf on my forearm that reads “and out come the wolves” to pay tribute to my all-time favorite band Rancid and the first album I ever heard by them. The artist that did it was a good friend of mine named Gordo who does amazing work and just opened up his own shop called “ONE TRUTH TATTOO” in northridge California. Go check it out!
What bands/musicians have influenced you the most and why?
Man that’s such a hard question. I think the earliest band I can remember making me feel something Rancid. I remember seeing “Wheatpaste” off of their newest coming album “And Out Come The Wolves” everywhere around Dtla, Hollywood, and the San Fernando Valley, and I finally went into the record store, bought the album not knowing who they are and it changed my entire life. That was the first punk rock band I ever listened to. They made me feel like I wasn’t alone and I’ll never forget that.
Are you currently writing new material?
We are! We have a new album out Spring 2017 so keep your eyes and ears peeled!
What is your perception of the current public educational system in the US?
Absolutely horrendous. It’s all about money, the money being placed right, teachers not getting paid the money they deserve, getting screwed out of their pensions, which trickles down to them not caring about the material they’re teaching, and not having the supplies to do so even if they wanted to. These kids plate our future, these are the people that we are going to depend on when we’re older and they should be treated as so.
If you could tour with any band/musician in the entire world, who would you choose and why?
I’m gonna say Selena Gomez so I can try to get her to date me. Very selfish, I know.
If you could take only three albums with you onto a deserted island, which three albums would you take and why?
1. Rancid ” And Out Come The Wolves” (bet you wouldn’t have guessed that).
2. Limp Bizkit “Significant Other”
3. Nas “Illmatic”
Those three albums I can just never get enough of.
Last but certainly not least, any messages for your fans?
Thank you guys so much for your support! Keep your eyes peeled for new music very soon.
