Liverpool alternative metal band, From Inside, are a band to look out for in 2017 and are currently celebrating the release of their promising debut EP, ‘The New Era’. Mixing mediums of creativity fluidity and gaining creativity through each realm, band member, Simon Mora is also a tattoo artist at Design 4 Life Tattoo Studio in Liverpool. I caught up with the guys to discuss dabbling into the two mediums, the new EP, growing up in Liverpool, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is From Inside?
Hey everyone, we are From Inside from Liverpool in England and we play our own brand of alternative metal/core. We are definitely influenced by the old skool sound of Linkin Park’s Meteora and Hybrid Theory albums however we bring a more modern & unique spin on thingsl After releasing a couple music videos towards the end of 2016 we are set to properly launch ourselves right into 2017 with our debut EP entitled ‘The New Era’. We are Simon Mora (vocals), Tom Booth (guitar), Phil Wynne (guitar), Bam Roberts (bass), and Nick Stirrup (electronics/vocals).
Congratulations on the upcoming release of your new EP, ‘THE NEW ERA’. Tell us about the creative and recording process this time around.
We are so stoked to finally release The New Era. We’ve been sitting on it for over year now which has just made us even more eager to get it out there and see what people make of it. With this being our debut release, it’s going to define what people think of our band and we were well aware of that through the entire process.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
Most of us are pretty covered now. Tattoos and music is just imbedded so far into our culture it really is a way of life for us now. We will give you a few personalised answer for this…
Simon: My favourite pieces are definitely the sleeve work my buddy Anrijs Straume has been working on at Bold As Brass in Liverpool where we live. I’ve always loved his style as it’s so unique and I know I can just give him any subject and he’ll kill it! For instance, I have the sickest Milhouse (from The Simpsons) tattoo you’ll ever see!
Tom: The piece that I like most is probably the medusa head on my left upper arm. I’ve always had a deep fascination with greek mythology and thought it was only fitting to dedicate that arm to it. I regularly make the trip over to Los Angeles to visit friends and always stop by my man Brendan Rowe at Memoir Tattoo.
He’s done both my arms and hands; it’s just a shame I have to fly halfway across the world to see him!
Bam: I’ve been managing tattoo studios over the last 3 years and the last place I was at, my good friend Charlie Tomlinson did this crazy good realistic portrait of Bill Murray on my thigh. He now works in Glasgow in Rock N Roll.
How has growing up in Liverpool influenced your artistry?
We’ve all been musically creative since we were young. Liverpool has such a rich musical history and with it being the birthplace of The Beatles it’s hard to find anywhere in the city that doesn’t celebrate our musical heritage and its just been engraved into our lives for as long as we can remember. An interesting fact is that we wrote all of The New Era EP at our two guitarists house which is located next to where George Harrison from The Beatles used to live.
If you could tour the world with any three bands/musicians for six months, who would you choose and why?
This is a really tough one and one that I don’t think as a band we could ever all agree upon if it was an actual choice for us to make. First band we will go with is Linkin Park because you just know that every show would be sold out in the most insanely big venues. Secondly; Architects because they are probably the best UK band of our generation and we share the same views & values on a personal level so hanging out with them would be cool. Finally, we will go our friends band Loathe. They just signed to SharpTone records and their live show is so unique and inspiring. The energy at this tour would be unreal.
What do fans of From Inside have to look forward to in 2017?!
It goes without saying that this is a big year for us. We are only a week in & we have just had our sell out EP launch show at The Magnet in Liverpool and also just dropped a music video for our lead single ‘Be Yourself’. We are under no illusions of how much hard work we have to put in over the next 12 months so to summarise your question we will be touring relentlessly, shooting a couple more music videos and also finishing off writing our full length album. If we receive the right offer from a record label then you may even see the album drop before the end of 2017.
Do you perceive that the artwork that contributes to music video/album/etc releases is a key component of expression? What are your thoughts?
Yeah definitely, a picture paints a thousand words. When you see a band’s album artwork for the first time you automatically get a sense of what the band is like and the image they are putting out there for the world to see. We’re very meticulous about style matching our songs, we want people to know what we’re about before they’ve even heard our music.
Simon, rumor has it that you are a tattoo artist as well. Tell us about your journey within the tattoo world.
Simon: Yeah I’m a blackwork artist based ar Design 4 Life Tattoo Studio in Liverpool. I started back in 2010 but due to some shady studios and personal health issues I only started tattooing at a professional level in 2014 but it’s been one crazy journey since then! I have just won my first award at the Blackpool Tattoo Convention so things are going really well and I feel so privileged that I can be apart of such an awesome industry. Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
The response we have received so far has been insane, it’s means so much to us that people understand what we’re trying to do with our music. We’ve had people message us saying how much they relate to our lyrics and some people have been sending us fan art so it just really helps us keep pushing. From all of us thank you so so much.
