Eventually if you keep scratching, you break through skin. Arriving to an entirely new level with a beloved chemistry that makes Switzerland metalcore band, Dreamshade, is enchanting their audience with with an inspiring combination of rolling basslines and emotional build ups. Today marks the release of their third studio album, ‘Vibrant’, available on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play. I caught up with the fellas to discuss the Switzerland music scene, tattoos, dream collaborations and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Dreamshade?
Fella: Hello everyone! Dreamshade is a Melodic Alternative Metal/Active Rock five-piece from Lugano, Switzerland. The band started in 2006, which is 10 years ago, and our aim has always been to combine melody with energy using very personal and emotional lyrics. For those who don’t know us you can find us anywhere on the web, from Spotify to Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and all other social media. Go check us out!
You guys just released your third studio album, ‘Vibrant’. Tell us about the creative and recording process behind this album.
Kevin: Yes “Vibrant” is our third full-length. In my opinion, it’s an important album in our career. The band has grown and the way we see and make music has gone to the next level. There were also some lineup changes that have allowed us to work in new ways than ever before. We wanted a simple title with a strong impact and meaning. Something that would reflect our new sound and the sacrifices we made to get it. I think that the creation of the new songs was very natural and spontaneous. We didn’t plan anything and let the songs take form without limits. Everyone in the band has contributed and we have worked together as a team to achieve a result that would satisfy each of us. The implementation process was longer than usual; there were unforeseen delays. Then, finding a good label deal for the release took some time. Also, the fact that we promoted our previous album on tour for a long time affected the recordings and the “Vibrant” process. But now here we are!
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
Kevin: My favorite piece is my left arm. It depicts the course of my life. The forearm is a ’50 styled microphone that comes out of a coffin wrapped in a scroll with the words “Rock it to the death.” It means that music is a fundamental part of my life and I will always carry it with me. In the front of my elbow there’s a pocket watch that tells the time in which I was born. Like the sun rises or sets, the pocket watch is behind a piano keyboard that marks the path that will lead me to the end of everything. It signifies the birth and the wear of a lifetime.
And on the shoulder there is a skull depicted that represents the afterlife. It’s not to be seen as a bad thing but it’s the inevitable course of life. Each of us must live it to the fullest and with joy despite the difficult times. The artist who made it is a good friend from Italy. His name is Luigi Stopar and he has tattooed all the band members. Take a look at his facebook page 😉
The music scene in Switzerland is abounding with diversity and talent. Are there any specific musicians that stand out to you amongst the masses originating from Switzerland?
Fella: In my opinion, the music scene in Switzerland is pretty small. Still, there are some cool bands that are recognized internationally and are worth checking out both in the Rock/Metal scene and also in other genres. I would suggest to check out artists like 77 Bombay Street, Eluveitie, Breakdown Of Sanity, Sophie hunger, Final Story, Stress, etc…
So, the scene is not very big, but as you said noticed, it is very diverse, there is a lot of variety in genres and I really appreciate that!
Congrats on the video premiere of your single, “It’s Over”. What led you toward releasing the song through a lyric video?
Kevin: We were very undecided on what would be the first music video and what the first lyric video. We love this album, each song has its own story and it’s always hard to make a decision about them. Then each of us sees the songs in a different way and this makes it even more difficult to make a choice. But in the end we opted for “It’s Over” because it’s a strong song with strong lyrics and that can involve everyone. This songs has a more rock approach and we wanted to give people something that shows how the band can be versatile. We are romantics 😉 and love stories, sad or beautiful they may always address people’s hearts.
Was there a defining moment where you felt compelled toward expressing yourself through music?
Fella: Well, no. I never really felt compelled. Music is just necessary for me. It’s just something that I need to do, just like eating or sleeping. That’s why i never “Rush” my songwriting, I need to take my time to perfect everything because I want the songs to express exactly what we mean and want them to have the right feel and ambience. The day that I will feel compelled to write music I will stop and think if it will be the case to do so 😉
Any upcoming tour plans that you can fill us in about?
Kevin: We didn’t announce any tour yet but we are working on it. We wanna play as much as possible and would like to return to the countries where we have already played but also be able to discover new ones. We want to work hard to get Dreamshade and “Vibrant” to all the people who have not yet had the opportunity to discover us and our music. Can’t wait to hit the US!
If you could tour with any fellow musician in the world for six months, who would you choose and why?
Fella: I would definitely choose to tour with Linkin Park. They are the band that got me into Rock and Metal in the first place, thanks to a suggestion of my older sister 😉 If it wasn’t for them I probably would have never become a musician at all. I will never thank my sister enough for this. Another cool band to tour with would be In Flames, they usually play big shows and are a very good live band. Go check them out if you have a chance!
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
Kevin: We can’t wait to meet and see you at our shows to party together. See you soon guys. Love you! Cheers 😉
