After a blisterining set at Summer Slaughter, I got a chance to sit down and shoot the shit with Derek Boyer, bassist of the extreme-metal band Suffocation. As a die-hard fan of death metal, seeing Suffocation perform live is always a treat for me, so I was genuinely thrilled to talk with one of the famous band members who inspired me to fall in love with death metal in the first place.
I’ve been following Suffocation since their first album Effigy of the Forgotten (released in 1991). To fellow metal fans, new fans, or anyone that’s just curious about the genre: Suffocation is literally one of the bands who “wrote the book” on death metal. If you’re an aspiring death metal artist – this is the band to study – their albums are the ones you need to buy.
During my interview with Derek, you’ll get to hear what it was like for him to play in front of a crowd 50,000 people for the first time. You’ll also hear how he handles the challenges of maintaining relationships while he’s on the road, and you’ll get to find out about his custom german-engineered bass by Devil’s Choice (which literally hits the ground of the stage when Derek performs). Last but not least, you’ll get a chance to see and hear all about his ink.
I highly recommend that you get yourself out to a Suffocation show in the very near future. Until then…
