Kicking off their career as musicians with a bang, Toronto natives, Curses, are charging forward in the music industry with a mixed bag of full force passion, talent and downright drive. I caught up with the burgeoning batch of ambitious human beings living their dream to discuss their upcoming studio session, tour schedule, tattoos, and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Curses?
Hey everyone! This is Martin Broda, Daniel Ennis and Michael Ferreira and we play in a band called Curses from Toronto, Canada.
Rumor has it that you’ll be hitting the studio this winter to record you debut studio album. What do fans have to look forward to with this release?
As far as the rumors go, we may or may not be hitting the studio sometime in the near future. All we can confirm at this point is we are doing a bunch of writing currently. We would love to put out a record but our minds are definitely in the early stages of that right now. We wanna make sure the songs we are writing are 110% start to finish before heading into a studio. But we can reassure the fans, that the new Curses material will be fire.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about your favorite pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
Martin: I’m super into traditional tattoos, I always have been. My favorite piece is actually a more recent one that I got, it’s a traditional black and grey chief skull with a headdress located on my upper right arm. The artist Conrad Sandbacka from Victory Tattoo based out of Toronto really brought my vision to life. From the surface looks like a simple clean piece but the more you dive into it you can definitely tell the intricateness behind the tattoo and the work that went into it. Another favorite piece of mine would be the two traditional anchors on my feet saying ‘MOM’ and ‘DAD’. The artist Billy White from Red Rose Tattoo in Zanesville, Ohio is a super talented tattoo artist that has been doing it for some time now and it definitely shows with his clean and vibrant traditional style. When I approached him with the idea, he loved it and banged both of them out in less than an hour.
You just got home from a two month American tour. Where was your absolute favorite venue to play and why?
We all absolutely love the west coast and we may be biased for saying this but our favorite venue we played on this tour was Whisky A Go-Go in Hollywood. It was just something about the atmosphere and the crowd that night, that made it super memorable. Not to mention the Whisky is a legendary venue where a lot of class acts played at, definitely something on our bucket list we can check off.
Who were your main early musical influences?
Martin: My early musical influences were Blink 182, The Used, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Underoath, Story of the Year, Good Charlotte
How did the chemistry behind Curses come together? Have you all known each other for quite some time?
We’ve known of each other prior from playing in different local bands together but it wasn’t until all of our old bands kind of fizzled out, where we realized that we still wanted to pursue this, which is the main reason why this band came to be. As far as the chemistry, we just got back from a 2 month tour and to say that I don’t hate the guys and still enjoy hanging out with them, says something haha
What constitutes as a great live performance in your opinion? What’s your approach to performing on stage?
My opinion a great live performance consists of a lot of things. The venue, sound guy, crowd, etc, but when it all clicks those 30 or so minutes on stage. There is no better feeling then that. My approach to performing is basically to never stop moving and to leave all that I have on that stage or wherever we’re playing. I feel like theres more to a great show then just great sound. We are performers and aren’t just playing for you to hear us, but to see us as well and enjoy it.
Which fellow relatively new musicians have you been listening to and really enjoying lately?
Daniel: There’s a great U.K. band called ‘The Hunna’ and they just dropped a new record. The song “Piece By Piece” was my favourite song of the summer. Other than that I’ve been listening to a lot of “Fidlar”, “Don Broco”, and “The Neighbourhood”
What is the intention behind the music you are creating as Curses?
Daniel: I guess we just want to write music that we enjoy but that will also reach a broad audience. We love doing what we do and we want as many people as possible to share the experience with us. We don’t really have any ulterior motives for writing the music that we play haha. We just want to have fun and be as creative as possible.
Last but certainly not least, any messages for your fans?
Michael: Honestly all we can say is thank you. A thousand times thank you because if it wasn’t for all the love and support we wouldn’t be able to do what we love so much. We owe everything to you.
