New Jersey metalcore band, Chasing Safety, have a spark within their musical signature that is immediately engaging and powerful. Over their second studio album, ‘Nomad’, the band explores being an individual in this world in a manner that is that molds together hard-hitting metal with a sound that separates them from the pack. I caught up vocalist, Johnny Galivan, to discuss the new album, growing up in New Jersey, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Chasing Safety?
My name is Johnny Galivan and I am the vocalist for the band. We also have Pat Hall playing guitar, Luke Chizek playing drums, and Kenny Davis singing and playing bass.
Congrats on the release of your second studio album, ‘Nomad’. Very intriguing title. Where did the concept behind the album come to life? Do you live a nomadic lifestyle?
The album is called ‘Nomad’ due to the common lyrical theme of being on your own in life.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
I have a Cowboy and Indian on the front/top of my shoulders facing each other as well as a scarecrow on my ribs that are my current favorites of what I have. Those three were all done by Brett Stuhler at All In Ink in Southern NJ.
Any upcoming tour plans or festival appearances that you can fill us in about?
Not that we can talk about at the moment unfortunately!
How has growing up in New Jersey influenced your artistry as a musician? What New Jersey musicians in particular sparked your passion?
Honestly, I wouldn’t say specific artists from NJ sparked my passion. I went to shows when I was really young before ever being in a band. All the older kids were all such good friends they all always had a show to go to, or a friends band that was playing somewhere. So naturally, as an impressionable young kid, I wanted that too. All I wanted to do was play this tiny billiards hall down the road from my house. I didn’t know I’d end up taking it this far.
Select two songs from ‘Nomad’ that mean something special to you and please share reasoning as to why.
“Brand New Prison” and “Erase Me” because they were songs that came together so naturally so quickly and it was really exciting to see what we’ve been talking about for months come together
Tell us about your experience being signed to Outerloop Records so far. Any labelmates that you’d like to give a shout-out to?
Its sick. And yea all of them! Go check out the whole roster – Lorna Shore, Youth in Revolt, Megosh. Everyone’s got new music coming or that just dropped.
Other than the album, what do fans of Chasing Safety have to look forward to in 2017?
Just gotta wait and see I guess!
Tell us about your all-time favorite concert experience and what made it stand-out amongst the rest?
I don’t actually have one. Every show is awesome. Even the shows I’m dreading end up being some of the most fun experiences.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?
Buy our damn album! And thanks for everything.
