Emotionally driven Pop/Punk band, Bearings, are gearing up to make some noise in the wild world of the music industry and have already stirred the pot with vigor and pride over their latest single, “North Hansen”. The Ottawa band that plays a mixture of fist pumping and fuel-injecting tracks are pushing their limits creativity and set to have the biggest year of their career yet. I caught up with the guys to discuss the new single, touring plans, life in Ontario, tattoos and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Bearings?
Bearings is a five piece from Ottawa, Ontario. The band is comprised of Doug, Collin, Ryan, Connor and Tyler.
Tell us about the creative process with bringing to life the music video for your latest single, “North Hansen”?
The song came to life out of an extremely deep and personal place, and it was important that the video reflected that. After bouncing a few ideas off Loeden, he came up with a great concept involving flowers symbolizing loss and death, with the flowers slowly withering away throughout the videos. The video came together super well and shooting the performance shots with Loeden felt extremely comfortable and went extremely smooth. We are very happy with the finished product.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
We have always been big fans of tattoos and love the culture around it. The only one currently tattooed in the band is Connor, but we all have plans to get some once we can afford it!
Any upcoming tour or festival appearances plans that you can fill us in about?
We have been working on getting into the United States for the last while and we can finally say we will be touring there a ton in 2017. We have many dates planned and can’t wait to get down there and meet a lot of great people.
If a human being who has never visited Ontario before was seeking the most unique spots to visit, what spots would you recommend and why?
In Ottawa, there is an amazing venue called House Of Targ that is a must visit! Arcade machines, delicious perogies, and great live music! There’s also a lot of cool nature spots we have visited like Websters Falls in Hamilton!
What bands/musicians influenced you to pick up an instrument and begin to play music?
We all love the pop-punk greats, like Sum 41, and Blink-182, but we all come from different musical backgrounds! We will jam anything in the van from the most catchy of pop to St. Anger by Metallica.
What do fans of Bearings have to look forward to in 2017?
We have plenty of touring plans and will be all over North America, as well as new music! Keep your eyes peeled.
As bands tend to spend a lot of time together, how do you guys maintain the chemistry amongst the band?
We are all extremely easy going guys and get along super well. We have a lot of chemistry on stage as well as off stage. When we aren’t on tour, we spend time together, going out for drinks, going to shows and playing NHL together. As a band goes on, you learn each other’s boundaries and know how to deal with each other in stressful situations. We are friends first and a band second.
If you could collaborate with any two musicians either dead or alive, who would you choose and why?
Dan “Soupy” Campbell of the Wonder Years would be a great one. We are all fans of the Wonder Years and love the work he did on the new Trash Boat record, so we’d love to collaborate with him. Also Ed Sheeran for the beautiful writing and unmatchable harmonies.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
Thank you to our fans for your continued support. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store this year. New music soon.
