Minnesota Metal group, Out Came The Wolves, are making waves as a young and blossoming band that provide an interesting perspective over highly-charged metal tracks and an insane stage performance for the books. Charging forward from the success of their debut album, ‘Strange Fate’, Out Came The Wolves is a band that we highly recommend you watch for in 2017. I caught up with vocalist, Cameron Burns, to discuss the emotive quality brought to life at an Out Came The Wolves show, how the guy’s lives have changed ever since being signed to Roadrunner Records, tattoos, and more.
First and foremost, introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Out Came The Wolves?
I am Cameron Burns. I sing for Out Came The Wolves. We are a rock band from Minneapolis/LA.
Congrats on the release of your debut album, ‘Strange Fate’. Tell us about how the concept of the album came to life and the journey through the creative process.
This album was a ton of fun to create. We started with a basic idea of this person trying to find this “perfect” place. That started to spiral and form the outline of “Strange Fate” It’s a loose concept album about this person who will stop at nothing to reach this perfect place, even if it means losing your mind. I think everyone in this world has their own idea of a perfect life. I really feel this album can be interpreted in many different ways depending on who is listening to it.
Let’s talk tattoos. Tell us about some of your favorite personal pieces and the artists that brought them to life.
I have a ton that have become my favorites over the years. I’ll start with the wolf on my neck. I have always had such a love for wolves and how they are. I really wanted to get a realistic one on my throat. A great friend of mine who has done a ton of my tattoos is Adam Chiodo out of The Ink Tailor. He is such a talented artist. Another great friend and tattoo artist Elisa Thorson —also of The Ink Tailor— did a majority of my work. She has done my whole right sleeve which has most of my favorite pieces like my owl and the clock on my hand.
Have your lives significantly changed ever since being signed to Roadrunner Records?! If so, how so?
Yeah, I can definitely say life has changed a drastic amount since being signed. It opened a door for me and the rest of my band to further our career, doing what we love. In a way, it makes people take you more seriously, if that makes sense. From releasing music to playing shows all around, I can say life definitely has changed since joining Roadrunner Records.
Any upcoming tour or festival appearances plans that you can fill us in about?
At the moment, there is not too much to talk about yet. But I am very excited for 2017 and where it takes us.
There is an emotive quality to your live stage performance that is electric. Do you perceive that is something that has come naturally through practice or an energy you gain from the crowd?
I would say it’s a bit of both. When I’m on stage, it feels like a high. I lose myself in the music and really open myself up. It definitely is important to practice and get everything as perfect as possible, to give everyone a memorable show to see. We are entertainers and that’s what I pride myself on — giving everyone in the crowd a “show.” Seeing the energy from the crowd really does help with performing. When I see everyone out there moving, jumping, and singing along, it makes me want to push myself even harder.
If you could travel and tour the world for six months with any two musicians/bands in the world, who would you choose and why?
Oh man! There are so many different choices for this question. I think I would have to make the first choice be Guns N’ Roses. I grew up on all that ‘80s metal music and GN’R had a huge influence on me and making me want to play music. My second choice would have to be Slipknot. I can speak for all of us when I say that Slipknot has influenced us through the years and it would be such an honor to share the stage with them.
What do fans of Out Came The Wolves have to look forward to in 2017?
Lots of badass things, I would say.
Any thoughts of adding some new tattoos to your body anytime soon?! If so, what ideas do you have in mind?
Definitely. I always have tons of ideas and plans for tattoos. We are currently working on a huge back piece that I hope to get finished soon. That one is being done by Elisa Thorson.
Last but certainly not least, any closing messages for your fans?!
Thank you, everyone, who supports us and jams our music. You all are the reason we can do this and I’m forever grateful.
