Angelina Jolie has always been one of our favorite tattooed movie stars; not many other actresses can so eloquently transform from gothic bad girl to polished glamourous humanitarian in just a few years and still rock her tattoos the way she does. Whether it’s inking her current flames name on her body or undergoing a Buddhist ritual where the ink is manually punctured with large metallic rods into her body, the mother-of-six always keeps us wanting more.
The Oscar-winning actress has come a long way from sporting her former husband, Billy Bob Thornton’s name with an Asian dragon tattooed underneath it on her shoulder. Since then, she has always given much thought and consideration to making sure each tattoo has significant meaning to her. Since then she has covered up the tattoo and confesses she will never have another man’s name tattooed on her ever again.
The actress now has tattoos from all over the world on her body and her new additions are no exception. Angelina recently added three new pieces to her upper back while filming a special project for Netflix in Cambodia. Her new artwork is a Buddhist blessing that stands for peace, love and a prosperous life. Due to her long-standing history and adoption of son Maddox from Cambodia, many are speculating that the actress had the tattoos done in a yantra or sak yant style. This style is a Southeast Asian tradition where the tattoo is hand etched and done by a Buddhist monk or some kind of “special ruesi practitioner”. The process can be viewed as a blessing ceremony since many believe that the special tattoo artists are able to “bestow certain powers on the person receiving the tattoo”.
Whether it’s flying to Cambodia for a Buddhist monk blessing or traveling to Bangkok to have well-known tattoo artist Sompong Kanphai create a special design for her, Angelina surely never disappoints and we can’t wait to see what she gets next.
