Here in New Mexico, hot air balloons are a pretty big deal. We have Balloon Fest in southern New Mexico in the spring, and we have Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque in the fall. Hot air balloons are big and beautiful balloons that have a way for people to ride in them. They were the very first successful flight contraption for humans, and they work with a simple system including an “envelope” or bag that contains hot air. The first hot air balloon flight was in the late 1700’s, so these passenger-carrying airships have been around for quite some time.
While many people have not seen a hot air balloon up close, these flying balloons have a unique design that lends itself well to customization. There are many designs of hot air balloons, and they’re often colorful. Sometimes they’re made into shapes, such as the sun, or characters of pop culture media. There’s no wonder that hot air balloons make for great tattoos, and there are a few really wonderful hot air balloon tattoos already inked into people’s skin. Here are just a few of the awesome hot air balloon tattoos out there.
This hot air balloon design features several different designs, showcasing how creative you can truly be when designing a hot air balloon tattoo. These balloons are adorable and remind me of what it’s like to watch a group of balloons ascend from the ground together, a truly breathtaking experience. (http://lynntattoos.deviantart.com/)
This intricate design of disaster for a hot air balloon is very unique, well designed, and expertly executed. While the tattoo is modern, the color palette is reminiscent of classic traditional tattooing. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/bruceroos/)
This hot air balloon design is actually from the cover of an album by the band Circa Survive. This is a great way to show love for a band without getting their name done. One of my favorite hot air balloon images ever, this is a fantastic tattoo for a fantastic band. (http://emilykaytattoos.deviantart.com/)
This whimsical and fun hot air balloon design is colorful and is a great depiction of the flying contraption. The clouds around the balloon convey that the balloon is in flight, rather than just floating on the arm. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/49456339@N07/)
Incredibly intricate and creative, this great hot air balloon tattoo features many elements. The teacup carrying the baby bird, carried by a Russian style castle balloon with an all-seeing eye. This is incredible, and I’d love to know how the design was created. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/tattoopooch/)
This hot air balloon seems to be flying through some turbulent winds, which can be symbolically significant. The muted color scheme lends to the design in a great way. I imagine this balloon struggling against a thunderstorm and coming through a little worn, but successful. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/27628278@N06/)
This tattoo features a design growing in popularity: the balloon carrying an anchor. Symbolically this can signify the need for freedom and grounding to be balanced. Clever and cute, this is a great tattoo. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/21586124@N05/3440082630)
