Beetles…yes the bug, no, not the musical sensation The Beatles, but the insect which accounts for one-quarter of all living creatures in the world. Often beetles are considered ugly little pests, but there are many types of beetles that are beautiful and interesting. There is much more to beetles than the common beetles and dung beetles most people are familiar with. An interesting fact about most beetles is that they have two sets of wings, which are hard like a skeletal shield. There are about 400,000 different types of beetles, and they make up about 40% of insects. Beetles can be found all over the world, except for in the oceans and in the polar regions of our planet.
With so many different types of beetles, it’s not a surprise that there are many people who enjoy some of these types. Did you know that fireflies are actually a type of beetle? You may know about Scarab beetles, one of the more beautiful types of beetles out there. They are often featured in Egypt-related movies, such as The Mummy. Ladybugs are sometimes called “Lady Beetles”, which is fitting as they are also part of the beetle family. Another popular type of beetle is the Rhino Beetle. There are many very interesting kinds of this insect in the world, and there are also some really awesome beetle tattoos. You may not be a fan of beetles now, but these tattoos may change your mind.
