True Colors Tattoo in Homestead, Florida specializes in Black and Grey and custom tattoos. I spoke with tattoo artist George about the chill shop, armpit tattoos and why the mainstream appeal of tattoos has enhanced his art.
How Did You Decide You Wanted to Become a Tattoo Artist?
When I was about nine or ten I had a friend that did tattoos and I kind of worked with him doing homemade ones, and then I realized I kinda wanted to do that. He was the kid that I really looked up to and wanted to be like.
What’s the most rewarding part of your career?
Making people happy.
What has been one of the most interesting tattoo requests you’ve been asked to do?
I’d have to say the armpit. I had a friend ask for that and at first I thought it was sort of weird.
Was the armpit tattoo painful for him?
Yeah I think so, but he took it really well and got through it.
How would you describe the atmosphere at True Colors Tattoo in Homestead, Florida?
It’s a chill spot.
What sort of tattoo trends do you see at the True Colors?
It really goes in flows. We have several months where everyone that comes in seems to want an owl tattoo, or then they come in the following few months wanting pocket watch designs. It comes and goes in all different phases.
What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t a tattoo artist?
I really don’t know what I’d be doing if I weren’t a tattoo artist. I’d probably be doing construction work somewhere.
What positives do you see as the the tattoo industry becomes more and more mainstream?
The quality of the work. From the color work to the black and grey, it makes me as an artist want to do even better.
What advice would you give someone getting their first tattoo?
Besides the artist search I would make sure the design is really something that you want. Many times people come back wanting their tattoos covered up because they end up not liking their tattoo design. So I would say to be very certain about the tattoo first.
