The most important part of your job as a tattoo designer is customer service. No matter how talented or skilled you are or how amazing your portfolio is, if you have bad customer service, you will lose clients, get projects cancelled and get no repeat customers! It's important to remember that our customers come to us with a need, to get a custom tattoo design created. They have different stories behind it, as well as busy lives. If a customer doesn't respond for a few days, it's likely that their personal life took precedence over their tattoo design. Sometimes our customers have had to leave for months because a loved one passed away or they were in a life threatening accident. Whatever happens, be professional! Do not let your ego or impatience get in the way of good customer service. Imagine going through something like a death of a loved one or recovering from an accident and then coming back to the site to get your design created only to find that some artists have been writing negative and threatening comments. If I were the customer, I would never come back to the site again.
Always be polite and helpful. Most people who post a request on the site do not know exactly how the process works. It's the job of the designers to educate them about the process. No matter how long you've been a tattoo designer on Tattoo.com, for most people, it's all new! Treat them as such and walk them through. They may decide to go forward with their request or they might now. It is their decision and we are here to provide a service if they choose to use it.
If you do have a legitimate problem with a customer, do not start threatening or posting negative comments on the request thread! Tell an admin right away about the situation. It is also helpful to take screenshots as people may edit their comments once they realize they are wrong. Handle it professionally by letting the site admins handle it. We are available by chat or you can email the Artist Liaison at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Excellent customer service can lead to a great star rating and stellar review. Don't be shy about asking for feedback. Once a project has been completed, direct the customer to your profile and ask them to write a review. Let them know you'd love to work with them again in the future. Always be professional!
