Brooklyn-based reggae/blues/soul outfit releases their sophomore album, Spirits Eat Music, via Easy Star Records.
Talking about how the album came together, vocalist Joanna Teters explains, “We got an invitation to record at Lydgate Sound, a special studio located on a remote cacao farm. The island and farm envelopes its visitors with lush nature and sweet sunshine, offering a beautiful kind of inspiration that can only come from being disconnected to our everyday lives and distractions.”
While drummer Ben Teters adds, “We enlisted Sidney Mills (Steel Pulse) to engineer and co-produce the album. We worked with Sidney on our first album ‘Burden of Love’ – the opportunity to go deep for two weeks in the studio with him took the project to new heights.”
Made up of Joanna (lead vocals), Ben (drums, vocals), Finn Singer (guitar), Josh T. Carter (bass), and Eric ‘The General’ Toussaint (keyboards, vocals), SunDub exploded with the release of their 2019 debut album, Burden of Love, featuring “Close To Me.”
Encompassing a dozen tracks, Spirits Eat Music begins with the title track, opening on an alluring one-drop beat topped by luscious layers of roots reggae. Joanna’s sultry, smoky vocals imbue the lyrics with smoldering charisma as bright, smooth brass accents add to the song’s flowing textures.
Entry points include “New Ways To Love,” featuring Peetah Morgan of Grammy-winning group Morgan Heritage. Brimming with yummy layers of reggae textures, a skiffing roll, and marvelous riffing vocals, the song rides a subterranean bassline and tight percussion.
With its slow, bluesy savors and mid-tempo rhythm, “The Storm” allows Joanna to strut the range of her deliciously nuanced voice, giving the lyrics creamy, sumptuous flavors. While “Just Like You” slows things down, traveling on a scrummy soul-tine reggae melody capped by Joanna’s plush, voluptuous vocals, infusing the lyrics with oozing, quixotic tones.
The last track, “I Know I’m Found,” blends lightly skiffing surfaces with tangs of gospel, forming a low-slung, irresistible tune drenched by Joanna’s crème de la crème voice, at once velvety and oh-so-tasty and swanky.
Starved of a lackluster track, Spirits Eat Music offers deluxe reggae, smooth and full of tropical energy, along with the superb vocals of Joanna Teter.
