Bloomingdale, Illinois-based Americana/country rock outfit The Skye Bleu Crew recently released their debut single “Doll House.”
Recorded at Skye Bleu Studios in Villa Park, IL, the track was engineered by Jason L. Botka and mastered by Grammy winner Blaise Barton at JoyRide Studios.
Made up of Jen Botka (vocals), Jason Botka (guitar, organ), Johnny Gadeikis (bass), and Dominic Fallico (drums), with guest Bill Sonoda (guitar), The Skye Bleu Crew’s sound on one level is raw and potent, with its retro ‘60s edge, while being creamy and elegant on another level.
“Doll House” opens on bluesy, drawling guitars reminiscent of The Byrds crossed with The Allman Brothers Band, riding a flowing rhythm composed of a fat, rolling bassline and Dominic’s tight, finessed drumming. Sonoda’s brilliant guitar infuses the harmonics with luminous accents.
The highlight of the song is the voice of Jen Botka, at once powerful and a little twangy, rife with tonal nuances and smooth, vibrant textures. For some reason, Jen’s voice conjures up suggestions of Janis Joplin, sans the gravelly timbres – heavy-duty and oh so evocative.
Over at Breaking & Entering, Deuce wrote, “The rhythm guitar curls and sinews, providing motion and space for the second most noticeable element of this tune, the magnificent vocals of Jen Botka. See where we’re going with this? The pair is truly memorable on this outing, with Jen delivering big-voiced crooning as well as nuanced mastery of melody—the former typifying elements of the hook; the latter, that of the verses.”
With “Doll House,” The Skye Bleu Crew delivers superb country rock with bluesy tinctures and the plush vocals of Jen Botka.
