Los Angeles pop-punk outfit ROCKET premiere their single, “Giants,” on Tattoo. The track was produced by Grammy-nominated Mark Needham and engineered by Doug Grean.
Explaining the song, ROCKET says, “’Giants’ is about the feeling you get when you accomplish something as a team or with a community. Sure, you’re a bad arse on your own, but sometimes it can be more empowering to recognize that you’re even mightier as a collective.”
Made up of Janelle Barreto (vocals), Eric Wibbelsmann (guitar), Steve Kilcullen (guitar), Jordan Lawson (bass), and Paul DePatie (drums), ROCKET formed in 2013. Since then, they’ve shared the stage with Bow Wow Wow, Alien Ant Farm, and Puddle of Mudd, along with being declared one of the “Best Bands to Catch” by CBS Los Angeles.
According to frontwoman Barreto, “We all just clicked from the get-go, had similar influences and a singular mindset. We are dedicated to being a voice for those who’ve been told they’re weird, strange or don’t fit in.”
“Giants” opens on thrumming guitars flowing into a rumbling, galvanizing rhythm topped by Barreto’s marvelously inflected voice infusing the lyrics with tantalizing textures. It’s a grand voice, bright, rich, and expressive, capable of searing screams and delicious rasping timbres.
“All that I’m looking for / If only….only / All that I’m waiting for / It starts today…. / Everything else and more / It can be, can be only / All that I’m dreaming of / Up and Away.”
A yummy breakdown pervaded by quivering guitars and quaking drums shifts the harmonics to shimmering layers of sound, chill, and pressure, and then launches into the stratosphere on electrifying surges of color.
ROCKET cooks with gas on “Giants,” pumping out beau coup sonic oomph on an infectiously muscular rhythm, all capped by Barreto’s crème de la crème voice.
ROCKET will play the Whisky a Go Go on November 16th, and their single “Giants” will be complemented by a music video later this year.
