Los Angeles-based alternative metal outfit Dopesick introduces their new single/music video, “No One Can Save You,” via Wake Up! Music Rocks. The track is from Dopesick’s upcoming EP, Lifter, set for release in January 2024.
Speaking about “No One Can Save You,” vocalist/guitarist/bassist Adam Albright says, “The song is told through the eyes of someone who’s lost, or who is deep into addiction.”
Wake Up! Music Rock’s CEO and founder Pepper Gomez shares, “Dopesick has released a powerful track. Dopesick’s sound is filled with cool drums, emotional vocals, and intense guitars.”
The video, shot in the Bay Area in West Oakland, California, features the drumming of Chris Kontos of Forbidden, The Boneless Ones, and Machine Head.
While playing with metal band Skinlab, in 1995, Albright was arrested for marijuana and served a 30-month sentence in Florida.
Albright explains, “I smoke to feel normal, for anxiety. If I don’t smoke, I don’t eat or sleep. I have OCD and I’m hyper, so it helps me function. I’ve been smoking weed since I was young, and it has always helped me.”
In jail, he heard the terms ‘downfreak’ and ‘dopesick.’
According to Albright, “I thought that when I got out, I would use that name.”
In 2017, Dopesick dropped their debut EP, The Love and Terror Cult, followed by their debut long player, A Violent Happy Place, in 2019. From 2020 to 2022, Dopesick released a series of singles, including “Summertime,” featuring H.R. of Bad Brains.
“No One Can Save You” opens on remote, filtered tones, and then launches into heavy, chugging guitars riding ferocious percussion and a stabbing bassline. Skreiching accents infuse the harmonics with frenetic, incandescent textures as Albright’s evocative vocals imbue the lyrics with portentous timbres.
On the chorus, Kontos’ gonzo drumming injects the rhythm with heaving, rumbling layers, leading to vicious, visceral guitar licks in the solo section. On the outro, the tune takes on a shuddering, thick wall of sound topped by electrifying rapping vocals.
Damn! Dopesick punches out thunderous, gravitational surfaces of alt-metal, surging with raw, gooey energy and beaucoup mass.
