South Florida’s nu-metal/alt-rock outfit Breathing Theory introduces their brand-new album, Artificial, via Wake Up! Music Rocks, the kick-ass label of Pepper Gomez.
Made up of Cory Britt (lead vocals), Collin Morrison (guitar, vocals), Rob Mahoney (guitar, vocals), Kegan King (drums), and Preston Daniel (bass), Breathing Theory got together in 2008, followed by releasing their debut EP, Parasite, in 2011.
In 2014, the band’s lineup changed. One year later, the restructured Breathing Theory dropped Uprise (Part 1), followed by Uprise (Part 2), featuring “Empire,” which amassed more than one million streams. In 2020, Breathing Theory released their debut album, Balance.
2021 saw the band sign with Wake Up! Music Rocks, followed by releasing a series of singles, including “Collapse,” “Replicas,” “Beautiful Disaster,” “Tethers,” and “The Cure.”
Encompassing 10 tracks, Artificial begins with “Replicas,” opening on gleaming tones rolling into powerful guitars, forming heavy, potent layers of sound as Britt’s rich vocals infuse the lyrics with passionate timbres.
Speaking subjectively, entry points include “Beautiful Disaster,” with its soft, shimmering intro, leading to thick guitars, pumping out viscous washes of thrumming resonance topped by sparkling accents. King’s drumming, along with the fat, pulsing bassline, carries the pulsating rhythm.
A personal favorite, “Transcend” travels on rampaging nu-metal dynamics as Britt’s savagely rasping, growling vocals give the lyrics demonic intensity. A breathy breakdown shifts the harmonic flow, followed by searing guitar licks.
Opening on gleaming surfaces of prog-rock, “My Cancer” delivers sensitive coloration topped by Britt’s velvety melodic voice. A gorgeous, glittering outro produces an enchanting finale of rippling, ethereal textures.
“Blackout” ties the album off, rolling out on a low-slung, elegant piano as Britt’s quixotic vocals infuse the lyrics with tender timbres. As the harmonics take on depth and dimension, the tune expands on hefty guitars, yet always maintains its compassionate savor.
Wonderfully, wrought, Artificial hums with contagious power as well as graceful interludes, displaying the sonic evolution of Breathing Theory.
