While inner lip tattoos have been around for a while, they’ve been steadily increasing in popularity. We can thank celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Lil Wayne, and Ke$ha for this rise in mouth-related ink. While many of them seem silly, we have to admit that lip tattoos offer a unique opportunity to receive a tattoo that isn’t obviously displayed on the body.
This mouth art is often considered to be a temporary tat because it has a high level of fall out after the healing process. Most inner lip tattoos will begin to fade and disappear between 1-5 years after the application, however, some begin to fade after several months. It all depends on the canvas. Some enthusiasts see this timeframe as a plus because it will allow them to get a funny tattoo that won’t last forever.
Before opting for a lip tattoo, you should know there is a huge debate regarding the pain inflicted by this ink. Some report that this placement is less painful than other parts of the body, while others say it’s more sensitive due to the high concentration of nerves within the lip.
With any tattoo, there also comes the risk of infection and the same is true with lip ink. Many artists caution clients that lip tattoos tend to be more at risk for infection due to the bacteria found in the mouth. In order to avoid infection, it’s vitally important to regularly clean the area and follow the aftercare instructions described by your artist.
