I took a moment and interviewed Josh Glasser, professional tattoo artist at Ink Side Out Tattoo and got his opinion on the changes in the tattoo industry, the significance of memorial tattoos and the true definition of a tattoo from an artist’s perspective.
How did you become interested in being a tattoo artist?
I’ve really just been an artist my whole. I had a friend who helped me practice and it really just went from there.
What are some of the biggest changes you think are happening within the tattoo industry?
People are getting away from flash designs and there are much greater skills within the artistry. Expectations are much higher than they used to be.
Describe a time you where you believe your talent truly helped someone?
This is a small community so memorial tattoos seem to have the most impact. But every tattoo is unique and truly just individual. It usually encourages something to the person wearing them.
What is the meaning or purpose of a tattoo?
It’s just art. And the artists all have a different expression of that.
When you aren’t tattooing, you can be found…
Either with my family and my two kids or I am working.
Could you describe the Ink Side Out Tattoo Fairfield shop?
It really feels like a lounge. Most tattoo shops either feel like a biker hangout or an uncomfortable hospital. Or the shops are decorated in a style that pleases the artist or owner more than the customer. Often tattoo artists make it about themselves when it comes to the décor or layout and they often put their own interests first. It’s very comfortable at Ink Side Out Tattoo. It’s not the typical tattoo shop.
