Dark, indie-pop singer-songwriter D’Arcy unveils new single/music video, “hold still.”
Speaking about the track, D’Arcy shares, “‘hold still’ both means I will always hold you and I will keep you still in the face of whatever chaos and grief may come.”
She goes on, “You can note somewhere that the first video was made by me of my partner, and the second video was made by my partner Leah Wasilewski, of me.”
In 2022, D’Arcy dropped her debut album, The Art of Flying, to a stream of amazing press, lauded by Kaltblut as “scary good,” and Ladygunn as “one of the best albums I’ve heard all year.” Grimy Goods praised her as “spellbinding,” in a review of her sold-out show at Los Angeles’ legendary Fonda Theatre.
D’Arcy has received acclaim and features from a slew of elite music outlets. She has played over 80 shows across the US, supporting bands like She Wants Revenge and Lee DeWyze. D’Arcy also DJ’s techno and house music, lighting up the dance floor at iconic New York City venues including Good Room, Le Bain, and Public.
“hold still” opens on dirty, shadowy tones topped by D’Arcy’s drifting, passion-laced vocals, imbuing the lyrics with proximate surfaces dripping with emotion. When the variegated rhythm enters, the tune takes on an unrelenting feeling, at once protective and adoring.
“When the party’s over / I’ll be your comfort, I’ll be it all / When your friends are dying / I’ll be the light and I’ll be it all / When I look into your eyes / Oh I know I feel alright / I will hold you still / I will hold you still.”
Akin to an alt-rock/pop lullaby, almost a hymn, “hold still” is simultaneously tender and haunting, highlighted by the evocative voice of D’Arcy.
